1. The First Days After Planting

A proper start is the key to successfully growing broccoli. The first days after transplanting seedlings into open ground largely determine whether you will get large, dense heads or be disappointed with this crop. In this section, we will break down what needs to be done immediately after transplanting to ensure plants quickly establish themselves and begin to grow.

When to Transplant Seedlings

Broccoli is a cold-hardy crop, but this does not mean it can be planted in unheated soil. The optimal age of seedlings for transplanting is 35–45 days after emergence (Autko et al., 2012). At this point, plants should have 5–6 true leaves when grown in pots or 3–4 leaves when grown in 65 cm³ cell trays (Autko et al., 2012).

When exactly to transplant:

  • Spring crop: late April — early May, when the threat of severe frosts has passed
  • Summer crop: late May — early June
  • Late summer-autumn crop: late July — early August (Autko et al., 2012)

In regions with mild climates, such as eastern North Carolina, spring planting is done from February 15 to April 15, and autumn planting from August 1 to September 15 (Torres Quezada, 2024). Rely not on the calendar but on the weather: the soil should warm to at least 8–10 °C.

Why Proper Planting Time is Crucial

If seedlings are planted too early, in cold soil, they may experience stress. Particularly dangerous is exposure to low temperatures (2–8 °C) during seed germination and immediately after transplanting — this can subsequently lead to bolting (premature flowering) before the head even forms (Autko et al., 2012). Simply put, the plants go to flower without forming a marketable head.

On the other hand, delaying planting leads to overgrown seedlings. Overgrown plants produce small, loose heads of low quality (Autko et al., 2012).

Soil Preparation Before Planting

Before transplanting seedlings, prepare the soil so that nothing hinders plant development:

1. Remove weeds. Perennial rhizomatous weeds (couch grass, sow thistle, bindweed) are especially dangerous. If left in the soil, they will rob broccoli of moisture and nutrients (Startsev, 2021).

2. Dig or loosen the soil to a depth of at least 20 cm to allow roots to penetrate deeply.

3. Apply fertilizers. Broccoli requires fertile soil with a high organic matter content. The optimal rate of mineral fertilizers is N₁₂₀–₁₅₀, P₈₀–₉₀, K₁₅₀–₁₈₀ kg a.i./ha (Autko et al., 2012). For garden beds, this translates to about 30–40 g of a complete fertilizer per 1 m².

Planting Scheme

Proper spacing between plants is a key success factor:

  • For large heads (single-stalk): spacing of 20–60 cm between plants in the row, and 60–90 cm between rows (Torres Quezada, 2024)
  • For bunching production (small heads for tying into bunches): denser planting — up to 10 cm between plants in the row (Torres Quezada, 2024)
  • For commercial production: scheme of 70 × 25–30 cm (40,000–50,000 plants/ha) (Autko et al., 2012)

The denser the planting, the smaller the heads will be. If your goal is large heads, do not overcrowd the planting.

How to Properly Transplant Seedlings

1. Harden off the seedlings. 7–10 days before transplanting, start acclimating plants to outdoor conditions by taking them outside, gradually increasing the time they spend there.

2. Moisten the soil before planting.

3. Plant on a cloudy day or in the evening to prevent sunburn on tender leaves.

4. Bury plants up to the cotyledon leaves — this encourages the formation of additional roots.

5. Water abundantly each plant immediately after planting (at least 1 liter of water per plant).

Watering in the First Days

In the first week after transplanting, watering is critically important. The root system hasn't yet recovered from transplanting, and plants can easily suffer from lack of moisture. Water broccoli daily or every other day, especially in hot weather.

Later on, broccoli needs 1–1.5 inches (2.5–3.8 cm) of water per week, but this rate depends on soil type, weather, and the stage of plant development (Torres Quezada, 2024). On sandy soils, which lose moisture quickly, watering should be more frequent but with smaller amounts.

Important: broccoli tolerates neither drying out nor waterlogging. With insufficient moisture, heads become small, coarse, and bitter-tasting. With excess moisture, plants are affected by root rots.

Protection from Stresses

In the first days after transplanting, plants are especially vulnerable:

  • From wind. If strong wind is forecast, set up temporary shelters.
  • From direct sun. In hot weather, it is recommended to shade young plants for the first 3–5 days after transplanting (e.g., using non-woven fabric like spunbond).
  • From frost. Although broccoli can withstand short-term temperature drops to –2…–7 °C, young, unacclimatized plants can suffer (Autko et al., 2012). Use covers when frost threatens.

The First Feeding

The first feeding is done 7–10 days after transplanting, when plants have established and begun active growth. Use nitrogen fertilizers (e.g., ammonium nitrate — 15–20 g per 10 L of water, apply 1 L per plant). Nitrogen is especially important in the initial stage as it stimulates the growth of the leaf rosette, which will later nourish the forming head (Torres Quezada, 2024).

Why this is important: broccoli has high nitrogen requirements (125–175 lbs/acre). Nitrogen deficiency leads to reduced yields, delayed maturity, and poor product quality (Torres Quezada, 2024).

2. Soil Loosening

Soil loosening is one of the simplest yet most important care practices for broccoli. Many gardeners underestimate its importance, yet regular and correct loosening directly affects the size and quality of the heads. In this chapter, we'll break down why to loosen the soil, how to do it correctly, and what mistakes are most common.

Why Loosen the Soil

Broccoli, like all brassicas, requires loose, breathable soil. Here’s what regular loosening provides:

1. Improves oxygen access to roots. The root system of broccoli is located in the topsoil — the bulk of the roots are at a depth of 10–20 cm (Torres Quezada, 2024). When a hard crust forms on the surface after watering or rain, air access to the roots is blocked. Plants begin to "suffocate," nutrient uptake slows, and heads form smaller.

2. Promotes soil warming. Loose soil warms up faster and more evenly in spring, which is especially important for early broccoli plantings. This stimulates root growth and accelerates plant development.

3. Conserves moisture. Paradoxically, loosening breaks the capillary structure of the soil through which moisture rises to the surface and evaporates. By breaking the soil crust, you reduce moisture loss and allow water to penetrate more deeply.

4. Controls weeds. Loosening between rows and around plants is also mechanical weeding. Weeds are removed in the "white thread" stage, when they haven't yet rooted and don't compete with broccoli for nutrients and water (Startsev, 2021).

When and How Often to Loosen

Broccoli requires loosening 2–3 times per season depending on soil condition and weather (Autko et al., 2012). However, the exact number depends on specific conditions. Follow these guidelines:

  • The first loosening is done 5–7 days after transplanting, when the soil has slightly compacted after watering. This helps remove early weeds and stimulates root growth.
  • Subsequent loosening — after each heavy rain or abundant watering, as soon as the soil dries out enough to not stick to the tool. It's important to prevent the formation of a hard crust.
  • The last loosening is done when the broccoli leaves close in the rows. After that, loosening becomes impossible without damaging the plants.

Guide: on average, loosen every 10–14 days during the first half of the growing season (until head formation begins).

How Deep to Loosen

Broccoli has a shallow root system, and it's very easy to damage the roots. Therefore, the loosening depth should be no more than 6–8 cm in the root zone and up to 10–12 cm between rows (Startsev, 2021).

Loosening deeper is dangerous — you can break off the fine absorbing roots that supply the plant with water and nutrients. They recover slowly, which delays head formation and reduces yield.

What Tool to Use

The choice of tool depends on the planting area:

  • On small beds, a hand cultivator, hoe, or narrow-bladed hoe is convenient.
  • On medium and large plots — a power tiller or mechanical hoe. For inter-row cultivation, cultivators like KOU-4/6 are used (Autko et al., 2012).
  • Between rows, it's convenient to use a Fokin flat-cutter — it loosens the top layer without turning the soil, preserving beneficial microflora.

Important Nuances and Precautions

1. Loosen only when the soil is moist. Dry soil turns to dust when loosened, which quickly blows away, and if you loosen right after watering, the soil sticks to the tool and forms clods. The best time is 1–2 days after rain or watering, when the soil is moist but not wet.

2. Do not loosen in the hot midday sun. In sunny weather, loosening leads to increased evaporation from exposed soil layers. Perform work in the morning or evening.

3. Combine loosening with weeding. Each time you go between the rows, remove weeds while they are small. This saves time and effort.

4. Be careful in the root zone. As broccoli grows, its leaves cover the soil, and the stem thickens. Loosening directly at the base of the stem must be done very carefully to avoid damaging the bark and provoking diseases.

Loosening and Mulching

Loosening is a temporary measure. To reduce the frequency of loosening while simultaneously protecting the soil from drying out and weeds, use mulching. We'll discuss this in detail in the next chapter. For now, we'll just note that combining loosening early in the season with mulch after the plants have strengthened gives the best results.

Why Weeds are So Dangerous for Broccoli

Weeds harm broccoli in three ways, each significantly reducing yield:

1. Competition for moisture. Weeds, especially early in the season, grow faster than cultivated plants. They outpace broccoli and actively absorb water from the topsoil, where the bulk of broccoli roots are located (Startsev, 2021). When moisture is lacking, broccoli growth slows, and heads form small and coarse.

2. Competition for nutrients. Weeds consume nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and micronutrients that broccoli needs to form large heads. Broccoli is particularly sensitive to nitrogen deficiency during the period of active leaf growth (Torres Quezada, 2024).

3. Shelter for pests and diseases. Many weeds serve as reservoirs for pathogens and pests characteristic of brassicas (Startsev, 2021). For example, wild crucifers (field mustard, wild radish, shepherd's purse) harbor and allow the multiplication of flea beetles, diamondback moths, aphids, and fungal diseases. Weeds create a "green bridge" for pests to move to cultivated plants.

When to Weed

The key with weeding is not to be late. There are two critical periods:

1. The first 3–4 weeks after transplanting. At this time, broccoli hasn't yet formed a powerful leaf rosette that could shade the soil and suppress weeds. Weeds appearing during this period cause the most damage. Studies have shown that weeds left in brassica crops for the first 3–4 weeks can reduce yields by 30–50%, even with subsequent weeding.

2. Before leaves close in the rows. Once broccoli leaves close, they create natural shade that slows the growth of new weeds. Before this happens, the beds must be clean.

Important principle: weed when weeds are in the "white thread" stage — when they have just emerged and haven't yet formed true leaves. At this stage, they are easy to remove, and their root system is still weak. If you let weeds grow to 2–3 true leaves, removal becomes labor-intensive, and they have already caused harm.

How to Weed Properly

Hand weeding. On small plots, this is the primary method. The technique is simple:

  • Weed after rain or watering — weeds pull out entirely, roots and all, from moist soil.
  • Remove weeds in the row by hand, being careful not to damage broccoli roots.
  • Between rows, it's convenient to use a hoe or flat-cutter, cutting weeds at a depth of 2–3 cm. Leave cut weeds on the bed — they will serve as mulch (more on this in the next chapter).

Mechanized weeding. On larger areas, inter-row cultivation is done with cultivators (e.g., KOU-4/6). According to the Institute of Vegetable Growing, 2–3 inter-row treatments per season plus 1–2 hand weedings in the row are sufficient (Autko et al., 2012).

Broccoli specific: broccoli stems are tender and easily damaged by mechanical cultivation. Therefore, cultivation is not done in the row — only between rows. Weeds in the row are removed only by hand.

Can You Avoid Weeding?

You cannot completely avoid weeding, but you can significantly reduce manual labor by using:

1. Mulching. Organic mulch (straw, mown grass, compost) 5–7 cm thick suppresses the growth of most weeds and retains soil moisture. This is the most environmentally friendly and effective way to reduce the need for weeding.

2. Plastic mulch (plastic films). Black or black-and-white film is used in commercial vegetable growing. It completely blocks weeds, warms the soil, and reduces moisture evaporation (Torres Quezada, 2024). This method is also applicable on small plots but requires additional costs.

3. Sowing green manure or using cover crops between rows — but this method is more suitable for large farms.

Herbicides: Pros and Cons

For home gardeners, we do not recommend using chemical herbicides unless absolutely necessary. However, if the area is heavily infested and the plot is large, knowledge about herbicides can be helpful.

In commercial brassica production, soil-applied herbicides are used to create a "screen" in the topsoil: as weed seeds germinate, they contact the herbicide and die (Startsev, 2021). Such products are applied both before transplanting and after. The main condition for effectiveness is moist soil.

For gardeners: there are herbicides based on natural components (e.g., acetic acid, oils) that can be used for spot treatment of individual weeds. However, they only act on the above-ground parts and do not provide a lasting effect.

Typical Weeding Mistakes

1. Delayed weeding. If weeds have overgrown, removing them traumatizes broccoli roots. Weed on time.

2. Deep weeding in the row. Broccoli roots are shallow, and deep loosening right at the stem damages them. Limit to superficial weed removal.

3. Leaving seed-bearing weeds on the bed. If weeds have produced seeds, they cannot be left on the surface — the seeds will mature and infest the area. Place such weeds in the compost pile or remove them from the plot.

4. Weeding in dry weather. Dry weeds break off, leaving roots in the soil. Weeding after watering or rain is more effective and easier.

Combining Weeding with Other Practices

The most rational approach is to combine weeding with loosening. By running a cultivator between rows, you simultaneously break the crust and destroy weed seedlings. This saves time and effort. However, in the row where hand work is done, it's better to separate weeding and loosening: first remove weeds, then carefully loosen the soil around the plants.

4. Mulching

Properly selected and applied mulch solves several tasks at once: retains moisture, suppresses weeds, regulates soil temperature, and even protects against some diseases. In this chapter, we'll discuss which types of mulch are suitable for broccoli, how and when to apply it, and the specifics of mulching this particular crop.

Why Mulch Broccoli

Broccoli responds particularly well to mulching for several reasons:

1. Shallow root system. The bulk of broccoli roots are in the top 10–20 cm of soil (Torres Quezada, 2024). Mulching protects this layer from drying out, compaction, and overheating — three major stressors for roots.

2. High moisture requirement. Broccoli needs constant, uniform soil moisture. Fluctuations in moisture lead to head cracking, coarseness, and a bitter taste. Mulch minimizes evaporation, reducing the frequency of watering.

3. Susceptibility to overheating. Unlike cabbage, broccoli is particularly sensitive to high temperatures during head formation. At temperatures above 25 °C, heads become loose, small, or fail to set at all (Torres Quezada, 2024). Mulching helps cool the soil in hot weather.

Types of Mulch for Broccoli

The choice of mulch depends on goals, climate, and available materials. Let's consider the main options.

Organic Mulch

Organic mulch includes: straw, hay, mown grass, compost, humus, fallen leaves, bark, wood chips.

Advantages:

  • Improves soil structure as it decomposes
  • Nourishes plants (especially compost and humus)
  • Supports beneficial microflora and earthworms
  • Doesn't need removal at the end of the season — just tilled into the soil

Disadvantages:

  • Needs replenishment during the season (organic matter decomposes)
  • Can introduce weed seeds (especially low-quality hay and straw)
  • In wet weather, can promote slug and rot development

How to use: the layer of organic mulch should be at least 5–7 cm. A thin layer does not suppress weeds and dries out quickly. Apply mulch after the soil has warmed to 12–15 °C and plants have grown to 10–15 cm.

Which mulch is best: well-rotted compost (it also nourishes), winter wheat straw (decomposes slowly), or mown grass without seeds are good for broccoli. Fresh sawdust and wood chips are not recommended for broccoli — they "tie up" nitrogen from the soil as they decompose.

Plastic Mulch

Thin polyethylene film, laid on the beds before transplanting, is widely used in commercial vegetable growing (Torres Quezada, 2024). Broccoli in this system is often grown with drip irrigation.

Types of film:

  • Black film. The most common option. Warms the soil well in spring and completely suppresses weeds. Recommended for cool climates and spring plantings.
  • Black-and-white film (white side up). Reflects sunlight, preventing the soil from overheating. Recommended for hot climates and summer/autumn plantings.
  • Clear film. Provides maximum soil warming, but weeds grow vigorously underneath. Practically not used for broccoli.

Advantages of plastic mulch:

  • Complete weed suppression
  • Moisture retention (plus drip irrigation)
  • Soil temperature regulation
  • Cleaner heads — they don't get splashed with soil
  • Option to apply soil fumigants under the film

Disadvantages:

  • High cost and need for disposal
  • Requires a drip irrigation system
  • Not suitable for multiple uses (though biodegradable films exist)

Specifics for broccoli: note that broccoli is sensitive to overheating. If you use black film in a hot climate or for summer plantings, the soil underneath can overheat, negatively affecting head formation. In such cases, white or black-and-white film is preferred.

Non-woven Materials (Spunbond, Agrofabric)

Black or dark brown spunbond (agrofabric) is a synthetic breathable material laid on the beds. It allows water and air to pass through but blocks light, preventing weeds from germinating.

Advantages:

  • Allows water and air penetration
  • Can be used for several seasons
  • Breathable, reducing the risk of fungal diseases
  • Suppresses weeds

Disadvantages:

  • Higher cost compared to organic mulch
  • Requires anchoring on the beds

White Mulch — A Special Case for Broccoli

It's important to remember: broccoli does not like overheating. Therefore, in regions with hot summers and for late planting dates, light-colored mulch (straw, mown grass) or white film is preferred.

If you use black film and the weather turns hot, there's a simple trick: shade the film by sprinkling a thin layer of straw or mown grass on it. This will significantly lower the soil temperature.

When and How to Apply Mulch

Organic mulch:

  • Wait until the soil has warmed up (usually 2–3 weeks after transplanting, when plants have grown)
  • Thoroughly weed the bed
  • Spread the mulch in a 5–7 cm layer, leaving a small space (2–3 cm) around the stem for air circulation and to prevent rot
  • Add a new layer as the old one decomposes

Plastic mulch:

  • Applied before transplanting on prepared beds
  • Holes are made for planting
  • Seedlings are planted through the holes
  • Drip tape is used under the film for irrigation

Non-woven materials:

  • Applied similarly to plastic mulch
  • Holes are cut for plants
  • Works well with drip irrigation

Mulching and Drip Irrigation

When using plastic mulch, drip irrigation becomes not just a convenient addition but a necessity. Moisture is delivered directly to the root zone, not getting on leaves and heads, which significantly reduces the risk of fungal diseases (Torres Quezada, 2024). Drip irrigation is especially effective in hot climates where surface evaporation is very high.

Common Mulching Mistakes

1. Too thick a layer of organic mulch. If the layer is more than 10 cm, it can impede air access to roots and, in wet weather, promote rotting of lower leaves and stems. Optimal: 5–7 cm.

2. Mulching before soil warms. Early mulching delays spring soil warming. Wait 2–3 weeks after transplanting until the soil warms sufficiently.

3. Mulch right against the stem. Never place mulch directly against the broccoli stem — this creates a high-humidity zone and promotes fungal diseases. Leave a 2–3 cm space around the plant.

4. Using fresh grass. Freshly cut grass, applied in a thick layer, can start to "heat up," potentially damaging plants. Let the grass wilt for 1–2 days.

5. Black film in hot weather. Using black film in hot climates leads to soil overheating. Switch to white or black-and-white film or organic mulch.

Mulching and Broccoli Care

Mulching significantly simplifies broccoli care. The number of waterings, weedings, and loosenings is reduced. However, remember: organic mulch gradually decomposes, and this process consumes nitrogen. Therefore, when using organic mulch (especially straw and sawdust), additional nitrogen feeding may be needed 2–3 weeks after application.

Unlike white cabbage, which can tolerate higher temperatures, broccoli in hot weather either doesn't form a head at all or produces small, loose, unmarketable heads. In this chapter, we will discuss how to recognize heat stress and what measures will help preserve the harvest in hot weather.

Why Broccoli is So Sensitive to Heat

Broccoli is a crop of temperate and cool climates. Its "comfort zone" for head formation is between 12 and 20 °C (54–68 °F) (Torres Quezada, 2024). When temperatures rise above 25 °C, irreversible changes occur:

  • Flower bud development accelerates, and the head begins to "bolt" — buds open before the head reaches the desired size.
  • The head becomes loose, color changes from deep green to yellow-green, and taste deteriorates.
  • During prolonged heat (above 30 °C), heads may not set at all — the plant transitions to the flowering phase, bypassing the formation of a marketable head (Torres Quezada, 2024).

Unlike cabbage, which forms a dense head even in relatively warm weather (though quality suffers), broccoli critically depends on coolness during head initiation and filling. If cabbage can "wait out" the heat and resume growth in autumn, broccoli exposed to heat often irreversibly loses marketable quality.

Signs of Heat Stress in Broccoli

To take timely action, learn to recognize the first signs of overheating:

1. Yellowing leaf edges — especially older, lower leaves.

2. Wilting, curling leaves during midday hours (even with adequate watering — this signals roots cannot keep up with transpiration).

3. Slowed growth — new leaves appear less frequently and are smaller than usual.

4. Premature opening of buds on the central head (head "bolts").

5. Formation of small, "thread-like" heads instead of dense heads (Torres Quezada, 2024).

How to Protect Broccoli from Heat

1. Choose the Right Planting Time

This is the most effective and simple way to avoid heat. Plant broccoli so that the head formation period falls during the cooler part of the year:

  • Spring planting: transplant as early as weather allows so heads form before summer heat arrives. In temperate climates, this is late April to early May; in warmer regions, February–March (Torres Quezada, 2024).
  • Autumn planting: plant in the second half of summer so heads form in September–October when the heat subsides. In eastern North Carolina, for example, autumn planting is done from August 1 to September 15 (Torres Quezada, 2024).
  • Avoid planting "at the peak of summer" in regions with hot climates (southern US, Mediterranean, southern regions of Russia). If summers are hot where you are, broccoli is grown only as an early spring or autumn crop.

2. Light-Colored Mulch — Best for Heat

You already know the benefits of mulching from the previous chapter. In hot weather, the color of the mulch is critical:

  • Black film works against you in heat — it accumulates solar heat and warms the soil to 45–50 °C, which is detrimental to broccoli roots.
  • White or black-and-white film (white side up) reflects sunlight, reducing soil temperature by 5–10 °C compared to black film (Kemble, 2022).
  • Light-colored organic mulch (straw, hay, dry grass) also reflects light and prevents soil overheating.
  • Trick for black film: if you are already using black film and the weather suddenly turns hot, you can sprinkle it with a thin layer of straw or shade it with white spunbond to reduce heating.

In southern regions and for summer plantings, preference should always be given to light-colored mulch.

3. Shading

Direct sunlight at midday is the main factor in overheating. Shading helps lower temperature and protect heads from scorching:

  • Shading nets (30–50% shade) — an effective method for small areas and greenhouses. Nets allow diffused light that doesn't overheat plants.
  • White non-woven cover material (spunbond) — can be draped over plants during the hottest hours, but allow air access.
  • "Protector neighbors" — tall plants (corn, sunflowers) planted on the south side can create natural partial shade. But ensure they don't shade the broccoli too much.

Important: shading should be temporary — remove covers in the evening and on cloudy days so plants get enough light for photosynthesis.

4. Watering — Not Just Moisture, But Cooling

  • Mature, hardened plants can withstand short-term temperature drops to –2…–7 °C (Autko et al., 2012; Torres Quezada, 2024). Light frosts not only do no harm but can even improve flavor — after cold nights, heads become sweeter and more tender.
  • Young, unacclimatized seedlings are more vulnerable. They can be damaged at –2…–3 °C.

In this chapter, we will explain how to "read" broccoli plants correctly and what to do if something goes wrong.

How Often to Inspect Broccoli

Ideally — at least once a week, and during critical periods (the first two weeks after transplanting, the head formation phase) — 2–3 times a week. A daily quick inspection, taking only 5–10 minutes, will help you spot problems early, when they are easiest to solve.

Inspect plants in the first half of the day, when leaves are still turgid and not wilted from heat. Choose several plants in different parts of the bed to get an overall picture.

What to Evaluate During Inspection

1. General Condition and Leaf Color

A healthy broccoli plant has uniformly greyish-green or bluish-green leaves. Leaves are firm, leathery, with a slight waxy bloom. A change in color or texture is the first sign of a problem.

Signs of Nutrient Deficiencies:

  • Nitrogen (N). Deficiency appears as yellowing (chlorosis) of older lower leaves, while veins may remain green. Growth slows, leaves become smaller. Cause: broccoli consumes a lot of nitrogen, especially during active rosette growth.   • Molybdenum (Mo). Molybdenum deficiency causes general leaf yellowing followed by edge necrosis, and in cauliflower, a characteristic "whip-tail" symptom (narrow distorted leaves). Broccoli is also sensitive to molybdenum, especially on acidic soils (pH below 5.5). What to do: check soil pH (optimal 6.0–6.5), lime if necessary. Foliar application of molybdenum (0.5 kg/ha sodium molybdate) (Torres Quezada, 2024; Kemble, 2022).

Important: do not confuse the natural yellowing of older lower leaves, which occurs as plants age, with nutrient deficiency. Normally, by the time the head forms, lower broccoli leaves may yellow slightly — this is normal.

Regular inspection allows you to identify diseases at an early stage, when they can still be controlled with preventive and biological means.

  • Downy mildew. Yellowish, angular spots, limited by veins, appear on the upper side of leaves. A greyish-white fungal growth appears on the underside. The disease develops in cool, wet weather, frequent fogs, and heavy dew (Startsev, 2021). Measures: crop rotation, removal of affected leaves, spraying with copper-based products or biofungicides.
  • Alternaria (Black spot). Dark concentric spots, resembling "targets," appear on leaves and stems. In wet weather, spots become covered with a dark mold. The disease often affects aging leaves and spreads through seed, so it's important to use healthy seed and disinfect before sowing (Autko et al., 2012). Measures: removal of diseased leaves, spraying with biofungicides (Trichoderma, Bactophyt) or copper-based products.
  • Damping-off (Blackleg). Affects seedlings and young plants: the stem base becomes thin, blackens, and the plant topples over. Causes: dense sowing, overwatering, cold soil.   • Flea beetles (Crucifer flea beetle). Small, up to 2–3 mm, dark-colored jumping beetles. They damage leaves, creating small round holes ("shot-holing"). Particularly dangerous for young plants — severe damage can kill them (Autko et al., 2012). Measures: planting broccoli under cover (spunbond) is the best protection. On small plots — repel with wood ash, tobacco dust, or spray with wormwood extract.
  • Caterpillars of cabbage white butterfly, cabbage looper, diamondback moth. They actively eat leaves and can get into the head. Signs: presence of chew marks on leaves, droppings, or the caterpillars themselves. The diamondback moth (small, grey-brown) is especially dangerous as it quickly develops resistance to insecticides (Startsev, 2021). Measures: regular hand-picking of caterpillars. Use biopesticides (Bitoxibacillin, Lepidocide), which are safe for humans and beneficial insects. Use pheromone traps to monitor butterfly flights.
  • Slugs and snails. Damage leaves and can eat young heads. Appear in wet weather. Measures: hand-picking, beer traps, or baits based on iron phosphate (safe for soil).

General principle: regular inspection helps you spot pests when their numbers are still low, allowing you to resort to mechanical or biological methods. Do not wait for a mass infestation.

4. Monitoring Growth and Maturity Timing

Broccoli develops very rapidly during the head formation phase. It is very important to follow this process so you don't miss the harvest time.

  • Rosette phase (first 4–6 weeks after transplanting). The plant grows its leaf mass. It is important during this period that the leaves are large and healthy — they will nourish the future head.
  • Head initiation. The central growing point begins to thicken and rise. This is a signal to increase potassium fertilization and monitor moisture.
  • Head development. During this period, the head increases in size by 1–2 cm per day under optimal conditions. Inspect plants every 2–3 days to not miss the moment when the head reaches marketable maturity.

What to evaluate: head size, density (it should be firm to the touch), bud color (they should be tightly closed, not open). If individual buds start to open, showing yellow petals, the head is overripe — harvest immediately.

Why Broccoli Produces Side Shoots

Broccoli is a plant with a monopodial branching pattern: the main stem shoot ends in a head (the central head). After its removal, axillary buds in the leaf axils awaken, from which side shoots develop. The tips of these shoots also form heads, albeit smaller ones (Autko et al., 2012). This biological mechanism allows the plant to reproduce itself: if the central head was eaten or damaged, side shoots ensure seed production. For the gardener, this means harvesting over a longer period.

How to Cut the Central Head Properly

The correct cutting technique for the first harvest is the foundation for a good second crop.

When to Cut

The central head is harvested at technical maturity, when the buds are tightly closed, have a rich green color, and have not begun to open. The size of the head depends on the variety and growing conditions, but on average the diameter is 10–20 cm, weight 300–600 g (Autko et al., 2012). Do not wait for the head to become as large as possible — as soon as the buds begin to "open" (yellow petals appear), quality declines rapidly.

In hot weather, the interval between maturity and over-maturity can be only 1–2 days, so inspect plants daily during this time (Autko et al., 2012).

How to Cut

Cut the central head with a stem part 10–20 cm long (Autko et al., 2012). This stem is also edible: juicy, tender, and tastes similar to cauliflower stems.

Important condition for stimulating side shoots: make the cut above 2–3 axillary buds located in the axils of the upper leaves. Leave at least 2–3 leaves on the plant to nourish the side shoots. If you cut too low, almost at the ground level, you remove all buds, and side shoots will not develop.

Technique:

  • Use a sharp knife or pruners.
  • Cut at an angle so water doesn't pool on the cut surface and cause rot.
  • Remove the central head during the cool part of the day (morning or evening) for better freshness retention.
  • After cutting, inspect the remaining part of the plant: 4–6 healthy leaves should remain on the stem.

Care After Cutting

Watering

After cutting the central head, the plant has used a lot of nutrients. Additional feeding is needed for vigorous side shoot growth.

  • Nitrogen. Applying nitrogen stimulates vegetative growth. Use a complex fertilizer with a predominance of nitrogen (e.g., nitroammophoska — 20–30 g per 10 L of water) or organic fertilizers (mullein infusion 1:10, nettle infusion).
  • Potassium and phosphorus. For quality side heads, potassium and phosphorus are important. Use complete micronutrient fertilizers (e.g., "Kemira Lux" — 15–20 g per 10 L of water) or wood ash (a glass per bucket of water, let stand for a day).
  • Micronutrients. Boron is particularly important, improving head quality and preventing cracking. Foliar application of boric acid (1 g per 1 L of water) 7–10 days after cutting is effective.

Feeding schedule: apply the first feeding immediately after cutting, and the second 10–14 days later when side shoots start growing actively.

Loosening and Weeding

After cutting, continue loosening the soil between rows (to a depth of 6–8 cm) and removing weeds. However, be careful: the broccoli roots are already well-developed and easily damaged. Loosen superficially, not closer than 10 cm from the stem. If you use mulch, its layer should be replenished to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.

Formation and Harvest of Side Shoots

2–3 weeks after cutting the central head, side shoots begin to grow from the axils of the upper leaves (often referred to as "secondary heads" or "side heads" in the literature). They are small heads about 4–8 cm in diameter (Autko et al., 2012). In taste and nutritional value, they are not inferior to the central head, and are often even more tender.

Maturity Timing

Side shoots do not mature simultaneously. Those closest to the tip of the stem develop first, followed by those lower down. This allows you to harvest gradually, over 2–4 weeks, extending the period for fresh broccoli consumption.

In cool autumn weather, side shoots may grow slowly but retain their marketable quality for a long time. In hot weather, they mature quickly but become loose (Autko et al., 2012).

How to Harvest

Cut side shoots when their heads reach 4–8 cm in diameter, buds are tightly closed, and have a bright green color. Cut them with a part of the stem (5–10 cm). Side shoots are usually harvested 1–2 times a week, as they mature. Do not delay harvesting — overripe side heads become coarse and lose flavor.

After cutting some side shoots, further, even smaller ones may develop, but their quality is lower. Usually, 2–3 waves of side heads are collected, after which the plant is depleted and removed.

Potential Problems When Growing Side Shoots

A plant that has already produced its central head is weakened and more susceptible to diseases and pests. Be vigilant.

  • Gray mold (Botrytis). Gray mold can develop on old leaves and stem cuts, especially in wet weather. Remove dying leaves, ventilate the planting, and avoid overcrowding.
  • Aphids. Aphids appear particularly actively on young shoots. Regularly inspect shoots; if necessary, use soap solution or bio-insecticides.
  • Caterpillars. Cabbage white butterfly and diamondback moth caterpillars can damage side heads. Pick caterpillars by hand or use biopesticides (Bitoxibacillin).

When side shoots become small (less than 3 cm in diameter) and their quality declines, the plant has exhausted its resources. Remove it from the bed and add it to the compost. This also helps prevent the spread of diseases and pests to the next season.

In some cases, if autumn is warm and plants look healthy, you can try to get one more, third wave, but its yield is usually low.
