In this chapter, we systematize all possible causes by groups, so you can quickly orient yourself and choose the right strategy.

Important note: The same external picture can be caused by different reasons. For example, yellowing of leaves can be a consequence of nitrogen deficiency, coccomycosis infection, or root damage. Therefore, never make a diagnosis based on a single symptom — consider them together.

4.1. Fungal Diseases

Fungi are the largest group of pathogens affecting cherries. They infect leaves, fruits, shoots, and bark. Most fungal infections develop under conditions of high humidity and moderate warmth.

Coccomycosis (Blumeriella jaapii)

  • Characteristic symptoms: small reddish-brown spots on leaves, which merge; white-pink coating (sporulation) on the underside. Leaves turn yellow and drop prematurely. Fruits may become deformed and fail to ripen (Mikheev & Revyakina, 2004).
  • Development conditions: warm, wet weather; dense canopies; poor air circulation. Overwinters on fallen leaves.
  • What to do: in autumn — thorough collection and destruction (burning or deep burial) of all fallen leaves. In spring — treatment with 3% Bordeaux mixture at the green cone stage. After flowering — 1% Bordeaux mixture or 0.1% topsin-M (Mikheev & Revyakina, 2004). In advanced cases — spraying with 4% urea solution on fallen leaves in autumn.

Moniliosis (Gray Mold, Monilial Blight) (Monilinia spp.)

  • Characteristic symptoms: sudden wilting and browning of flowers, young leaves, and shoots — they look scorched. Gray coating in wet weather — spores. Fruits develop brown spots, rot and mummify, often remaining hanging on the tree until the next year (Mikheev & Revyakina, 2004; Long et al., 2021).
  • Development conditions: wet weather during flowering, mechanical damage (hail, insects), rain cracks on fruits. Overwinters in mummified fruits and diseased branches.
  • What to do: cut out affected branches, taking 10–15 cm of healthy tissue, and burn. In spring before bud break — 3% iron sulfate or 3% Bordeaux. Before flowering and immediately after — 1% Bordeaux mixture or copper oxychloride (Mikheev & Revyakina, 2004). Regularly collect and destroy mummified fruits.

Clasterosporiosis (Shot-hole Disease) (Thyrostroma carpophilum)

  • Characteristic symptoms: reddish-brown spots on leaves; tissue in the center of the spot dies and falls out — forming through-holes ("shot-hole"). On shoots — reddish spots, bark cracks, gum exudes. Fruits develop spots and deform (Mikheev & Revyakina, 2004).
  • Development conditions: warm, wet weather; dense plantings. Overwinters as mycelium in affected shoots.
  • What to do: same measures as for moniliosis. Sanitary pruning and removal of diseased branches are especially important.

Anthracnose (Colletotrichum acutatum)

  • Characteristic symptoms: on ripening fruits, dull round spots appear, then small dark bumps in concentric rings. In wet weather — pink slimy cushions (sporulation), in dry weather — pink crust. Fruits shrivel and mummify. Damage can reach 50–80% of the crop (Mikheev & Revyakina, 2004).
  • Development conditions: wet, rainy summer. Overwinters on affected fruits and branches.
  • What to do: spray with polyram (0.2%): before flowering, immediately after flowering, and two weeks after the second. Remove and burn affected fruits and branches.

Powdery Mildew (Podosphaera clandestina)

  • Characteristic symptoms: white powdery coating on the upper side of leaves, then on shoots and fruits. Leaves deform and may drop prematurely. Spots appear on fruits, making them unmarketable (especially in dry regions) (Long et al., 2021).

Cytosporosis (Leucostoma spp.)

  • Transmission routes: with infected planting material, through pollen (especially PNRSV and PDV), by sucking insects (aphids, leafhoppers, scale insects), sometimes through nematodes.
  • What to do: no cure. The only measure is removal and burning of diseased trees. Plant only certified healthy material. Control vectors. For pollen-transmitted viruses, remove trees before flowering to prevent spread (Mink & Jones, 1996).

4.4. Pests

Pests are divided into sucking, leaf-chewing, fruit-infesting, and stem-boring. Each group leaves characteristic "traces."

Sucking Pests (Aphids, Mites)

  • How to recognize: leaves wilt during the day, edges dry, fruits become smaller, premature leaf fall. Weak shoot growth. Prolonged drought may cause leaf reddening (Westwood, 1993).
  • What to do: regular watering (deep, to wet the entire root zone — 40–60 cm); mulching the root zone (compost, grass, straw) to retain moisture.

Waterlogging

  • How to recognize: leaves turn yellow; tree is depressed; wilting may occur. Roots darken and rot. Often leads to root rots (Phytophthora) (Long et al., 2021).
  • What to do: improve drainage; plant on ridges or mounds; choose rootstocks tolerant to waterlogging (Mazzard). Stop watering until soil dries.

Winter Damage (Frost Cracks, Sunscald)

  • How to recognize: on trunk and branch bark — longitudinal cracks, bark peeling, often on the south side (sunscald). In spring, such branches may not wake up or may exude gum (Westwood, 1993).

A simple algorithm:

1. Start with care. If you are unsure of the exact diagnosis but symptoms resemble nutritional imbalance or weather stress — adjust watering, fertilization, and mulching. This is safe and often yields results.

2. If symptoms are clearly infectious (spots, coatings, rot, gum) — immediately remove affected parts (leaves, branches, fruits) and burn them. Then apply the appropriate product (fungicide or bactericide) strictly according to instructions.

3. If a virus is suspected — remove the entire tree to prevent infection of neighbors.

4. For pests — start with mechanical methods (collection, shaking, trapping bands) and only with mass reproduction switch to insecticides.

5. If the cause is care errors — correct them in the future season. For example, change pruning timing or fertilization scheme.

Important: Do not apply chemicals "just in case." This can harm beneficial insects, disrupt the ecological balance, and cause pest resistance. Carry out all treatments only when the economic threshold of harmfulness is reached, i.e., when the damage from the pest or disease exceeds the cost of treatment (Hochmuth & Sideman, 2023).

Summary

There are many possible causes of cherry problems, but they can be systematized into five main groups:

5. When Urgent Intervention is Required

Most cherry problems develop gradually, giving the gardener time for observation, diagnosis refinement, and scheduled actions. But there are situations when delay is fatal — for the tree or for the entire orchard. In this chapter, we will cover alarming signals requiring immediate action, and a step-by-step emergency aid algorithm.

Why Speed of Response Matters

In some cases, a delay of 1–2 days can cost the tree its life or lead to the infection of neighboring plants. Particularly dangerous are:

  • Aggressive infections that spread through the vascular system within days (moniliosis, bacterial canker, verticillium wilt).
  • Massive pest reproduction capable of destroying the crop or weakening the tree to death.
  • Critical bark damage disrupting the transport of water and nutrients.

The main rule: if you see the tree's condition deteriorating day by day, do not wait — act.

5.1. Rapid Spread of Symptoms

If you notice that the lesion is covering new branches, leaves, or fruits within a day or two — this is a signal of high pathogen activity.

1. Isolate the focus. Start treatment with the first detected tree, then move to neighbors. If there is a clearly diseased tree — remove it first.

2. Treat all trees in the orchard, even those without symptoms, as a preventive measure (fungicides, insecticides as needed).

3. Disinfect tools after working with each tree (alcohol, 1% potassium permanganate solution, 10% bleach).

4. Destroy plant residues — burn, do not compost diseased material.

5. Keep records — note dates of detection, treatments, and effectiveness. This will help in the future season.

5.6. What Not to Do

In emergencies, it is easy to make mistakes that worsen the situation.

4. If more than 50% of the crown is affected or the trunk is critically damaged — remove the tree completely, without wasting time on attempts to treat it. Burn all material, including roots (if possible).

5. After removing the diseased tree — treat the root zone with a disinfectant solution (copper sulfate, bleach) and let the soil "rest" (do not plant stone fruits for 3–5 years).

6. Monitor neighboring trees during the next season — at the first signs of infection, repeat the scheme.
