Many gardeners growing pepper for the first time wonder, “Do I need to shape it like tomatoes?” The answer is not straightforward. Unlike tomatoes, where suckering is almost mandatory, peppers require a more selective approach. In this article, we will break down when and why peppers are shaped, and when these techniques are not only useless but actually harmful.
1. Do Peppers Need Forming at All? Dependence on Variety and Growing Conditions
The short answer: they are shaped, but not always and not for all varieties.
Why Can Peppers Be Shaped at All?

- Low-growing, compact varieties (dwarf, determinate): shaping is often unnecessary. They have short internodes and weak branching (Autko et al., 2012). The plant itself forms a compact bush, and removing shoots may only reduce yield.
- Medium‑vigour varieties: moderate shaping is recommended—removing the weakest shoots and limiting the first flowers.
- Tall, vigorous varieties (especially for greenhouses and protected cultivation): shaping is essential. Without it, plants become dense, poorly ventilated, fruits are smaller, and yields drop (Kotov & Adritskaya, 2016).
2. Growing conditions
- Open ground (temperate climate): only tall varieties are shaped. For low‑growing ones, it is enough to remove the “crown” flower and provide support.
- Greenhouses and tunnels (protected cultivation): here shaping is most relevant. In a greenhouse, plants can grow up to 2 m and bear fruit for up to 7 months (Autko et al., 2012). Without growth control, they turn into impenetrable thickets.
- Regions with short summers (northern areas): it is essential to limit the number of fruit sets and pinch the tops so that fruits ripen before the cold.
- Regions with long warm seasons (south, subtropics): plants can vegetate longer, so shaping is aimed not at accelerating ripening but at optimising load and extending fruiting.
3. Pepper type: hot vs. sweet
- Sweet pepper (bell pepper): shaping is most common. Large fruits put high demand on the bush, so removing excess shoots helps redirect nutrients to the fruit sets and improve fruit quality.
- Hot pepper (chilli, cayenne, jalapeño): shaping is rarer, especially when grown for spice (dried fruits). However, for large fleshy fruits (e.g., ancho, poblano), the same techniques as for sweet peppers are used (Swiader, 1992).
The Golden Rule
Pepper shaping is not a mandatory ritual, but a tool for solving specific tasks: increasing fruit size, accelerating ripening, improving ventilation, and easing maintenance. If the bush grows well, does not thicken, and produces an excellent harvest—maybe it does not need your “intervention.”
2. The First Crown Flower: To Remove or Not?
One of the most common questions from novice gardeners: “Should I remove the first flower on a pepper?” Opinions are divided: some are sure it is a must‑do, others consider it a loss of yield. Let’s look at the physiology and when this decision is truly justified.
What Is a “Crown Flower”?
Peppers have a unique feature: the main stem ends with a flower after forming 8–15 leaves—this is the first crown flower (Wien & Stützel, 2020). From the two axillary buds below it, two new shoots grow, forming the first fork (crotch). This flower is set as early as the seedling stage and often appears even before transplanting.
Why Remove It? The Main Logic
Removing the first flower has one goal: to allow the plant to build up a strong vegetative mass before it starts spending resources on fruit formation.
The physiology is simple. The plant is a system with a limited supply of assimilates (photosynthetic products). If the flower is pollinated and begins to set fruit, all the bush’s energy switches to filling that fruit. Stem and leaf growth slows or stops. As a result, the plant remains short, weak, with few leaves—and therefore future yield will be modest, because the larger the leaf apparatus, the more photosynthesis, and the larger and more numerous the fruits (Swiader, 1992).
By removing the crown flower, we delay fruiting by 1–2 weeks, but during that time the bush manages to form 2–3 strong continuation shoots, develop a powerful root system, and build leaf area. In the end, the plant enters fruiting stronger, and total seasonal yield is higher (Kotov & Adritskaya, 2016).
When Is Removing the Crown Flower Really Beneficial?
1. For tall varieties in protected cultivation (greenhouses, tunnels). In a greenhouse, the season is long (up to 7–8 months), so there is time to build the bush. Removing the first flower pays off many times over: plants form 3–4 strong shoots, and yields increase by 20–30% (Russo, 2012).
2. For sweet peppers with large fruits (bell, thick‑walled). Large fruits require many resources. If the bush is weak, the fruits will be small and misshapen. Removing the first flower allows the plant to “bulk up” before the load.
3. When growing from seedlings in regions with long warm seasons (south, subtropics). If the season allows, it is better to sacrifice the first flowers for a more powerful bush and greater overall yield.
When NOT to Remove (or When It Is Harmful)
1. For low‑growing, dwarf varieties (determinate, early). In such varieties, growth is genetically limited: they do not build a large bush even if the flower is removed. Removing it will only deprive you of an early harvest without increasing the total (Autko et al., 2012).
2. With short summers (northern regions, highlands). Every day counts. If you remove the first flower, the next wave of fruits may simply not ripen before the cold. In such conditions, leave the first flower to guarantee at least a few fruits.
3. For hot peppers with small fruits (chilli, cayenne, jalapeño). They do not need a powerful bush to produce large fruits. Small peppers set in large numbers even on small plants. Removing the flower here has almost no effect on final yield but delays the first supply of spices.
4. If seedlings are overgrown or weakened. If the plant is already flowering at transplant and looks weak, removing the flower may further set it back. Better to leave it—let it give at least one fruit, and then it will still grow.
How to Remove Correctly?
Remove the flower when it is still a bud, before opening. Do this with sharp, clean pruners or simply pinch with your fingernails, being careful not to damage the axillary buds below. Important: remove only the flower itself, not the entire tip of the shoot. The continuation shoot remains intact.
An Alternative View: Can You Leave It and Not Lose Yield?
Some gardeners, especially in hobby gardening, leave the first flower and then, when the fruit starts to grow, remove it when it reaches pea size. This technique signals to the plant “flowering has occurred, now grow shoots,” while saving resources because the ovary is removed early, before much assimilate has been spent on it. However, it is more labour‑intensive, and its effectiveness is not supported by research.
Final Practical Rule
- Tall sweet pepper in a greenhouse — remove.
- Low‑growing or hot pepper in open ground — leave.
- If unsure of the variety — leave one flower on 2–3 plants and compare the result at the end of the season. This is the best solution for your specific plot.
3. Shaping into 2–3 Stems: How and Why
You already know that the pepper stem branches dichotomously: each shoot ends with a flower, and from the two axillary buds below it, two new continuation shoots grow. If left alone, the number of shoots doubles with each tier: 1 → 2 → 4 → 8 → 16. In a greenhouse or long season, such a bush turns into a real jungle. Overcrowding leads to diseases, poor ventilation, reduced fruit set, and smaller fruits (Wien & Stützel, 2020). Shaping into 2–3 stems is a deliberate limitation of the number of fruiting shoots to manage load and fruit quality.
Why Exactly 2–3 Stems, Not 1 or 5?
One stem is unnatural for peppers. The plant is genetically programmed to branch, and if you remove all side shoots, yield drops sharply because most fruits form on second‑ and third‑order branches (Swiader, 1992).
Four or more stems lead to overcrowding. Shoots compete for light, nutrients, and space. As a result, fruits are smaller, ripen later, and the risk of fungal diseases increases due to poor air circulation (Kotov & Adritskaya, 2016).
The optimum is 2 or 3 stems. This number allows:
- even distribution of assimilates between fruits and leaves;
- good light penetration to all tiers;
- manageable bush shape (easy to tie, treat, and harvest).
When to Choose 2 Stems and When 3?
The choice depends on the variety’s vigour, growing conditions, and your goals.
2 stems — the standard for most tall varieties in greenhouses and tunnels, especially under intensive technology (supplemental lighting, CO₂ enrichment). With two stems, the load is moderate, fruits are larger and ripen faster. This option is more common in Northern Europe, Canada, and regions with limited light periods (Russo, 2012). Two‑stem training (V‑shaped trellis) is popular in the Netherlands (Russo, 2012).
3 stems — for very vigorous varieties and regions with long sunny seasons (southern areas, Mediterranean, subtropics). Three stems yield more fruits, but they are slightly smaller. This option—the “Spanish system” without intensive pruning—is used in Spain and Mexico (Russo, 2012). In open ground with short summers, three stems may delay ripening, so they are left only for mid‑ and late‑season varieties when there is sufficient warmth.
How to Properly Shape a Bush into 2–3 Stems: Step‑by‑Step
Step 1. Wait for the first fork (first crown flower).
Remove the crown flower (if you decided to) and watch how the shoots from the two axillary buds below it grow. These are your future main stems (called continuation shoots or leaders). They usually appear simultaneously and have roughly equal vigour.
Step 2. Select the leaders.
From all the shoots that appear at the fork, leave 2 of the strongest (for two‑stem training) or 3 of the strongest (for three‑stem). Remove all other shoots that may appear from leaf axils below the fork—they are barren or produce very small fruits (called “suckers” or “water shoots”).
Important: if the variety initially produces not 2 but 3–4 shoots at the fork (occurs in some large‑fruited varieties), leave 2–3 of the most promising and pinch out the rest.
Step 3. Manage each stem independently.
Tie each remaining shoot to a separate support or string. From there, it will branch in the same way: at each next tier, new shoots form from the axils of the two upper leaves. You can also limit these, but selectively.
Step 4. Control branching on each stem.
On each leader, generally leave all shoots that appear, but thin out the weakest if needed. However, in commercial greenhouses, a common principle is: at each new fork, leave only one continuation shoot (i.e., do not allow doubling, but keep the stem as a single “thread”). This simplifies care but requires more experience. For hobbyists, it is easier to leave both shoots at each fork, but then you must ensure that there are no more than 3–4 actively fruiting branches per stem.
Step 5. Fruit load regulation and topping.
When the desired number of fruits has set on each stem (usually 4–6 per stem for large‑fruited varieties), pinch the shoot tip above the last fruit, leaving 1–2 leaves above it. This forces the plant to channel all energy into filling the already set fruits rather than growing new shoots (Kotov & Adritskaya, 2016). More on this in Chapter 6.
Specifics for Different Conditions
Open ground in temperate climates:
- Leave 2–3 stems only for tall varieties.
- For low‑growing varieties, shaping is not needed—just remove suckers below the first fork and tie up.
- With a short season, choose 2 stems to speed up ripening.
Greenhouses and tunnels:
- Always shape into 2–3 stems, otherwise yield drops due to overcrowding.
- Use vertical trellising with each stem tied separately.
- In a long‑cycle greenhouse (up to 8–10 months), you can manage 3 stems, but then more intensive feeding and watering are required.
Hot peppers:
- If growing for drying or spice, shaping is usually not needed—small fruits set well on all shoots.
- However, for large‑fruited hot varieties (ancho, poblano), apply the same rules as for sweet peppers.
Typical Mistakes in 2–3 Stem Training
1. Leaving too many shoots — afraid of losing yield. Result: bush thickens, fruits become small.
2. Removing leaves on the stems, especially lower ones, too early — reduces photosynthesis and slows growth.
3. Delayed pinching of tops — when fruits are already large and the plant continues to grow upward, nutrients are spread thin, and fruits do not reach maximum size.
4. Not tying each stem — heavy fruits can break the shoot at the base.
Practical Advice
Start with two stems if you are a beginner. It is the most reliable and proven option. As you gain experience, you can experiment with three stems, especially if growing vigorous hybrids. Remember: in any case, shaping is ongoing care throughout the season, not a one‑off action.
4. Removing Suckers and Leaves: When Justified, When Harmful
Peppers, like tomatoes, produce side shoots (suckers) in leaf axils. But while tomatoes are almost always suckered, peppers require a more nuanced approach. Gardeners often transfer tomato habits to peppers and unnecessarily wound the plant. Let’s clarify which shoots and leaves should really be removed and which are better left.
How Do Pepper Suckers Differ from Tomato Suckers?
In tomatoes, a sucker is a competitor that diverts nutrition from the main truss but rarely produces a full crop itself. In peppers, it is different. Pepper suckers are continuation shoots—indeed, the main yield forms on them (Wien & Stützel, 2020). Each fork gives two new shoots, and if you remove them, the plant loses fruiting potential. Therefore, massive suckering of peppers as in tomatoes is not practised (Swiader, 1992).
However, this does not mean nothing should be removed. There are three types of shoots that really should be removed:
1. Suckers growing below the first fork (from lower leaf axils). They are usually weak, produce small fruits, and delay the growth of the main shoots. Remove them as soon as they appear (Kotov & Adritskaya, 2016).
2. The weakest shoots in the fork (if there are more than two). Some varieties produce 3–4 shoots at the fork. Leave only 2–3 of the strongest, remove the rest (Russo, 2012).
3. Inward‑growing shoots that crowd the centre. They worsen ventilation, create shade, and do not yield quality fruit. Remove them, especially in greenhouses where air circulation is important.
Suckers That Are NOT Removed
All continuation shoots that form at forks on the main stems are left. They carry the main crop. If you have shaped the bush into 2–3 stems, each will branch, and these new shoots are your future fruiting branches. Removing them means reducing yield.
Leaf Removal: When and Why?
Unlike suckers, leaf removal in peppers is a more common practice. Its aim is to improve light exposure of fruits and ventilation of the lower part of the bush.
When Leaf Removal Is Beneficial:
1. Lower leaves that touch the soil or lie on the ground. They often become infected with fungal diseases (late blight, grey mould) and act as a source of infection. Remove them up to the first fork (Kotov & Adritskaya, 2016).
2. Leaves that heavily shade fruits (especially in greenhouses). Pepper fruits need light for colouration, sugar accumulation, and vitamin content. If leaves densely cover fruits, the yield may be pale and less sweet (Russo, 2012). Remove 1–2 leaves above the fruit set.
3. Yellowed, old, or damaged leaves. They no longer photosynthesise but still consume resources (respiration, maintenance). Their removal benefits the plant (Swiader, 1992).
4. Leaves on the lower part of the stem if they obstruct access, care, or harvesting. Especially relevant in greenhouses with narrow rows.
5. Leaves in dense plantings. If you planted peppers too closely, removing 1–2 leaves from each plant can improve overall light and reduce disease risk (Wien & Stützel, 2020).
When Leaf Removal Is Harmful:
1. On young plants (before the first fork). Removing leaves before a full bush has formed slows growth and delays fruiting. The plant needs all its leaf mass for photosynthesis.
2. In hot, dry weather. Leaves protect fruits from sunburn (solar injury). If removed, especially in open ground, fruits can get sunburn—white, soft spots that later rot (Wien & Stützel, 2020; Swiader, 1992).
3. Under water deficit. Fewer leaves mean less water evaporation, but in intense heat, leaves help cool the plant. Bare stems and fruits suffer from overheating.
4. For low‑growing varieties. Their leaves are almost the entire photosynthetic apparatus. Removing even lower leaves sharply reduces yield.
How to Properly Remove Leaves and Suckers
- Best time – morning of a dry day. Then wounds dry by evening and infection risk is lower (Kotov & Adritskaya, 2016).
- Use sharp, clean tools. Secateurs or scissors for leaves, fingernails for suckers. If removing a sucker, do it before it exceeds 5 cm — then it is easy to break out and the wound is small.
- Do not leave stubs. When removing a sucker or leaf, cut flush with the stem to avoid protruding petioles that may rot (Autko et al., 2012).
- Remove no more than 1–2 leaves per plant at one time. Massive removal stresses the pepper. Better to do it regularly, little by little (e.g., once a week).
Practical Scheme for the Hobbyist
1. Transplanted seedlings: remove nothing until the first fork. Just water and feed.
2. First fork appears: remove all suckers below it. If 3–4 shoots formed, leave 2–3 of the strongest.
3. During active growth (before mass fruiting): remove lower yellowed leaves and those touching the ground. In greenhouses, also 1–2 leaves above each fruit set to expose fruits.
4. During fruiting: monitor density. If the bush is very dense, remove a few inner leaves and weak inward‑growing shoots.
5. 3–4 weeks before season end: remove upper leaves above the last fruit sets to channel nutrition into fruit filling (see Chapter 6).
Key Mistakes
1. Too early removal of healthy green leaves – reduces photosynthesis and yield.
2. Removing leaves in extreme heat – causes fruit sunburn.
3. Late removal of suckers (when they are already large) – the wound remains large and heals slowly, increasing infection risk.
4. Removing many leaves at once – severe stress; the plant may “pause” and stop ovary growth.
5. Staking and Support: Preventing Breakage
Pepper is a plant with an amazing property: it can break under its own weight. Brittle stems, especially at forks, combined with heavy fruits, are a dangerous combination. Strong wind, heavy rain, or simply a bountiful harvest can cause the bush to split, stems to crack, and fruits to end up on the ground. In this chapter, we’ll look at how and when to stake peppers to avoid losses.
Why Does Pepper Need Support?
Peppers have two weak points: forks (crotches) and the root collar zone. Forks are where the stem divides into two shoots. They often cannot bear the load and crack (Swiader, 1992). Moreover, the pepper root system is relatively weak and shallow—under strong wind or waterlogged soil, the plant can simply be uprooted (Wien & Stützel, 2020).
Regular staking addresses three tasks:
1. Prevents breakage of stems and forks.
2. Ensures vertical position, allowing better light exposure and ventilation.
3. Makes care easier — watering, fertilising, pest/disease treatment, and harvesting (Kotov & Adritskaya, 2016).
Which Plants Must Be Staked?
Mandatory:
- All tall varieties (over 1 m), especially in greenhouses and tunnels.
- Varieties with large fruits (bell, thick‑walled, some hot types like ancho).
- Plants grown on fertile soils with ample watering (they quickly put on mass).
Optional (but recommended):
- Low‑growing, compact varieties (up to 50–60 cm). They need not be staked, but a prop under a heavy branch won't hurt.
- Hot peppers with small fruits (chilli, cayenne) — they usually do not break, but if the bush is vigorous, better to be safe.
Staking Methods: Choose According to Your Growing System
1. Vertical Trellis (for greenhouses and open‑ground rows)
The most effective method for tall peppers. A strong wire or string (horizontal trellis) is stretched above rows, and vertical strings (twine) are dropped to each stem. As they grow, stems are twined around the string or tied to it with special clips (Russo, 2012).
In greenhouses, a V‑shaped trellis is often used: two rows of wire 50 cm apart. Stems are tied alternately to the right and left wires, creating a V‑shape — this improves light inside the row (Kotov & Adritskaya, 2016).
Advantages: reliable, allows plants to be grown up to 2–2.5 m tall, convenient for long‑term fruiting.
2. Individual Stakes (for open ground and small plots)
A sturdy stake (wood, metal, plastic) 60–100 cm high (up to 1.5 m for tall varieties) is driven next to each plant or between plants. The stem is tied to the stake at several points as it grows (Swiader, 1992).
Drawbacks: stakes take up space, may damage roots during installation, and may not withstand strong winds.
3. Horizontal Trellis (Spanish System)
Popular in southern regions (Spain, Mexico). Several rows of wire are stretched between rows at different heights (e.g., 40, 80, and 120 cm from the ground). Stems are not tied vertically but laid between rows of wire, supported by them (Russo, 2012). This system requires less labour but suits varieties that are not too tall and climates with low wind risk.
4. Support for Individual Branches (for heavy fruits)
If the bush is not fully staked but only one branch is heavily loaded, you can tie it separately to a stake or neighbouring plant. This is a temporary solution but saves the crop.
How to Stake Correctly: Rules and Tips
1. Do not tie too tightly. The stem grows and thickens. A tight tie can constrict it, disrupting water and nutrient flow. Leave a gap of 1–2 mm (Kotov & Adritskaya, 2016).
2. Use soft, wide material. Synthetic twine, nylon tape, special clips — they do not cut into the stem. Do not use thin wire or rough string.
3. Tie each fork separately. Especially important to tie each main stem (leader) at the first fork — this is the weakest area (Autko et al., 2012).
4. Tie as they grow. Do not wait until the stem starts leaning to the ground. Start staking when plants reach 30–40 cm, and add new ties every 20–30 cm of growth.
5. For open ground — consider wind. In windy regions, use stronger supports (thick stakes) and orient rows along the prevailing wind to reduce sail effect.
6. In greenhouses — use clip fasteners. They allow quick tying without knots and are easy to remove if needed (e.g., when renewing plantings).
Staking Specifics for Different Conditions
Greenhouses (protected cultivation):
- Almost always use vertical trellises.
- A wire is stretched above each row, and twine is attached to it for each stem.
- In long‑cycle greenhouses (8–10 months), plants can reach 3 m. Staking becomes multi‑tiered: as the stem grows, it is lowered (slackened), laying the lower part on the soil or a special net (Wien & Stützel, 2020).
Open ground with short season:
- Individual stakes or low horizontal trellises (up to 1 m) suffice.
- You can use a climbing plant net — stretch it over rows, and shoots pass through the mesh.
Regions with strong winds or heavy rain:
- Use stronger supports and additional guy lines.
- If a storm is possible, temporarily cover plants with spunbond or other agrotextile to reduce load.
Mistakes to Avoid
1. Too late staking. Once the stem has bent or cracked, it is almost impossible to repair.
2. Tight staking constricts the stem. Noticeable by constriction and thickening above the tie point.
3. Using stakes that scratch or damage roots. When installing stakes, try not to hit the root ball.
4. Tying all shoots into one bunch. This thickens the bush and reduces light. Each stem should be tied separately.
5. Ignoring staking for low‑growing varieties with heavy fruits. Even a 50‑cm bush can break under the weight of 5–6 large peppers.
Practical Recommendations for the Gardener
- If you have only a few plants — use sturdy wooden or metal stakes (at least 1.2 m high for tall varieties). Drive them 20–30 cm deep at planting or shortly after.
- If you have many beds — stretch a horizontal trellis on stakes (2–3 rows of wire), and from it drop twine to each stem.
- For greenhouses — definitely a vertical trellis with clips. It will pay off in ease of care and crop preservation.
- Tie not only stems but also individual fruit‑bearing branches if they bend heavily.
Remember: proper staking is not just protection from wind; it is one of the key elements of yield management. Vertical position improves light exposure, so fruits will be larger, sweeter, and more colourful.
6. Growth Limitation and Crop Load Regulation: How to Get Maximum in a Short Summer
In regions with short and cool summers (northern areas, highlands, Siberia, the Urals, as well as temperate climates with late springs), the main enemy of peppers is time. Fruits may simply not ripen before the first frost. Even in warm areas, if you want especially large fruits, you cannot do without regulation. In this chapter, we cover two important techniques: pinching tops (growth limitation) and removing excess fruit sets (crop load regulation).
Physiology: Why Can’t the Plant Give Everything at Once?
Peppers lack a “stop signal” — they can flower and set fruit continuously as long as the weather permits (Wien & Stützel, 2020). However, plant resources are limited. Each new fruit, each new set requires carbohydrates, water, and minerals. If there are too many sets, they compete with each other — as a result, all fruits become smaller, and ripening is delayed (Swiader, 1992).
If left unchecked, the bush spends energy on growing new shoots and flowers, while already‑filling fruits receive less nutrition and ripen later. With a short season, this means part of the crop simply will not mature.
Two techniques — pinching tops and removing excess fruit sets — allow redirecting resources to where they will bring maximum benefit.
Pinching Tops (Stopping Growth)
Essence: removing the growing point on each fruiting shoot to stop further stem elongation and channel all assimilates to already‑set fruits.
When and Why to Pinch?
1. 3–4 weeks before the expected frost (or season end). This is the main rule. In the middle belt — usually late July to early August. In southern regions — depending on the end of vegetation (Kotov & Adritskaya, 2016).
2. When each stem has set a sufficient number of fruits. For large‑fruited varieties — 4–6 fruits per stem. For small‑fruited — 8–10. Beyond that, the plant simply will not have time to grow them to marketable size.
3. When the bush is overloaded with sets. If you see too many small sets and fruits are not growing, pinching tops and removing some sets may save the situation.
How to Pinch Correctly?
Step 1. Identify the last fruit set that can ripen in time. Keep in mind that for most varieties, from set to technical maturity takes 30–35 days, to biological maturity (full colour) about 50–60 days (Wien & Stützel, 2020; Swiader, 1992). Count back from the expected end‑of‑season date.
Step 2. Above that set, leave 1–2 leaves (this is important!). These leaves will “feed” the fruit, providing carbohydrates (Kotov & Adritskaya, 2016). Then pinch the shoot tip, removing the growing point with a couple of small leaves.
Step 3. Repeat on each main stem, as well as on all actively fruiting side shoots.
What Does Pinching Give?
- Fruits become larger and heavier, as all nutrition goes to their filling.

Mistakes in Pinching
- Too early pinching (6 or more weeks before season end). In that case, the plant may produce new side shoots from the axils of the upper leaves, which will start flowering again. You will have to repeat the procedure.
- Pinching without leaving a leaf above the set. This often leads to the fruit not getting enough nutrition and growing small.
- Pinching all shoots at once. Better to do it in several steps over 3–5 days to avoid severe stress.
Regulating Fruit Set Load
Essence: removing some flowers or small fruit sets so that the remaining ones receive more nutrition and grow larger.
When Is Load Regulation Necessary?
1. For large‑fruited varieties in protected cultivation. To get fruits weighing 250–300 g or more, leave no more than 4–6 sets per stem (Russo, 2012). Remove the rest at bud or small‑set stage.
2. With a short season, when there are too many sets that clearly will not ripen. Removing small, weak sets, especially at the top of the bush, helps the lower ones mature.
3. To produce giant fruits (experiments, competitions, special markets). Sometimes only 2–3 fruits per plant are left — then they can reach maximum possible size (up to 500 g or more).
How to Conduct Load Regulation?
- Remove flowers or sets that will not ripen in time. These are usually the topmost, last flowers on shoots. They are visibly smaller and often drop by themselves.
- Remove deformed, misshapen sets. They will not produce a marketable fruit but will draw nutrition.
- Leave the strongest, properly placed sets. Ideally, they are evenly distributed along the stem, not clustered in one spot.
- Do it gradually. You can remove some flowers at the bud stage, and later, when sets have grown, leave only the most promising.
How Many Fruits to Leave Per Bush?
A general recommendation for tall large‑fruited varieties in open ground with a short season: 8–12 fruits per bush (Autko et al., 2012). For greenhouses with long seasons — up to 20–30 fruits over the season, but they ripen in several waves.
For small‑fruited varieties (chilli, jalapeño): no load regulation is needed; the plant regulates itself — many small fruits, but they ripen quickly.
Important warning: if you remove too many sets, the plant may “decide” its mission is accomplished and switch to vegetative growth or even stop altogether. So load regulation is a fine balance. For beginners, it is better not to overdo it: remove only obviously extra and weak sets.
Combined Approach: Pinching + Load Regulation
In practice, these techniques are often used together.
Example plan for a region with a short summer (e.g., Non‑Black Earth, Siberia):
1. Early July (after main shoots formed and first fruits set): remove all weak side shoots, leave 2–3 strong ones.
2. Mid‑July: remove all flowers and sets that clearly will not develop (the smallest, located high on shoots). Leave 4–6 large sets per stem.
3. Late July – early August: pinch the tops of all fruiting shoots above the last set, leaving 1–2 leaves.
4. Until the end of the season: continue removing newly appearing flowers — they will no longer produce a full crop and will only drain energy from ripening fruits.
In warm regions (southern Russia, Mediterranean, subtropics), these dates shift 1–2 months later, and with a long season (over 6 months) you can allow several waves of fruiting, pinching only before the final end of the cycle.
Mistakes in Growth Limitation and Load Regulation
1. Too few sets left. The plant may drop some leaves and stop growing because it “sees” no need to continue. Leave at least 3–4 fruits per stem.
2. Too many sets left for a short season. Fruits will not ripen, will be small and tasteless.
3. Pinching without considering the variety. In some varieties, the growing point continues producing new shoots even after pinching — you have to repeat. In others, pinching causes strong lateral branching.
4. Removing all upper leaves along with the growing point. Leaves are needed to feed the fruits; they cannot all be removed.
5. Load regulation on an already weakened plant. If the bush is diseased or suffering from drought, removing sets may only worsen its condition.
Practical Takeaway
- With a short season (less than 110–120 frost‑free days): definitely pinch tops 3–4 weeks before cold and remove excess sets.

Pepper shaping is not a set of rigid rules but a system of decisions made based on your plant, variety, weather, and season. Unsurprisingly, even experienced gardeners sometimes err. In this chapter, we have collected 10 of the most common mistakes — easy to make, but even easier to avoid if you understand the plant’s logic.
Mistake 1. Shaping All Varieties the Same Way
The problem: the gardener applies the same scheme (e.g., 2 stems + pinching) to all peppers — dwarf, tall, hot, and sweet alike.
Why it is bad: low‑growing varieties are genetically programmed for a compact bush. Removing shoots does not stimulate large fruit growth; it simply reduces yield (Autko et al., 2012). Hot peppers with small fruits also do not need intensive shaping — their yield forms on all shoots.
How to do it right: before shaping, learn the variety’s characteristics. If the packet says “determinate,” “dwarf,” “for open ground” — limit yourself to removing suckers below the first fork and staking. Intensive shaping is for tall hybrids, especially greenhouse ones.
Mistake 2. Removing All Suckers Like with Tomatoes
The problem: mechanically transferring tomato practices to peppers, pinching out all side shoots indiscriminately.
Why it is bad: in tomatoes, fruits form on the main stem, and suckers are competitors. In peppers, on the contrary, the main fruits set on continuation shoots that appear at forks. Removing them deprives the plant of the main yield (Wien & Stützel, 2020).
How to do it right: remove only suckers below the first fork and the weakest shoots in the fork (if more than two). All other continuation shoots — leave them; they will bear fruit.
Mistake 3. Removing Leaves Too Early or Too Late
The problem: starting to strip leaves as soon as the plant settles, or conversely, not removing yellowed, diseased leaves until the end of the season.
Why it is bad: too‑early leaf removal weakens young plants, reduces photosynthesis, and delays growth. Too‑late removal allows diseases to spread in the lower tier, where leaves touch the ground and are poorly ventilated.
How to do it right: remove leaves only when they start yellowing, drying, or lying on the ground. In greenhouses, you can remove 1–2 leaves above sets to expose fruits, but not before 5–6 full leaves have formed above (Kotov & Adritskaya, 2016).
Mistake 4. Not Staking or Staking Too Tightly
The problem: either no staking at all, or tying the twine “dead‑tight” around the stem.
Why it is bad: without support, stems break at forks from fruit weight or wind. With tight ties, the stem is constricted, water and nutrient flow is disrupted, and a constriction develops that can kill part of the bush (Swiader, 1992).
How to do it right: tie each main stem to a separate support with soft, wide material, leaving a small gap (1–2 mm) for thickening. Renew ties as growth occurs.
Mistake 5. Pinching the Top Without Leaving Leaves Above the Set
The problem: when limiting growth, removing the growing point together with all upper leaves, leaving a “bare” stem with fruits.
Why it is bad: the last 1–2 leaves above the fruit are the main suppliers of carbohydrates for its filling. Without them, the fruit grows slower and becomes smaller (Wien & Stützel, 2020).
How to do it right: when pinching, always leave at least one, preferably two, full leaves above the uppermost set you want to grow.
Mistake 6. Overloading the Bush with Sets (or, Conversely, Leaving Too Few)
The problem: either leaving all sets hoping for a record harvest, or removing almost all to achieve giant fruits.
Why it is bad: with overload, all fruits become smaller, ripen late, and are often deformed. With underload, the plant may “decide” its mission is done and stop vegetating or drop leaves (Swiader, 1992).
How to do it right: for large‑fruited varieties in open ground with a short season, leave 4–6 fruits per stem. For greenhouses with long seasons, more, but in several waves. For small‑fruited varieties, load regulation is not needed.
Mistake 7. Ignoring Regional Conditions and Season Length
The problem: applying schemes suitable for the south in the north, and vice versa.
Why it is bad: in short summers, every week counts. If you do not pinch and thin sets, fruits will not ripen. In warm climates, early pinching can reduce yield potential because the season is still long.
How to do it right: plan shaping based on the average date of first frost. Count back 50–60 days for fruit ripening — anything that sets later, remove. In southern regions, shape into 3 stems and do not pinch until autumn.
Mistake 8. Removing Many Leaves at Once
The problem: stripping all lower leaves or several large leaves from the middle of the bush in one day.
Why it is bad: it is a severe stress. Sudden loss of photosynthetic surface can cause fruit drop, growth stop, and even sunburn on fruits (Autko et al., 2012).
How to do it right: remove no more than 1–2 leaves per plant at a time, and do it regularly, not all at once. Allow at least 3–5 days between removals.
Mistake 9. Not Staking the Forks (the Weakest Points)
The problem: staking only the main stem, while forks remain unsupported.
Why it is bad: the fork is the most vulnerable spot on the pepper. It is there that the stem most often cracks under fruit weight. If each fork is not tied separately, the bush may split in half (Kotov & Adritskaya, 2016).
How to do it right: tie each main shoot separately, and also, if needed, support individual heavy branches. The loop should encircle the stem just below the fork.
Mistake 10. Shaping Once at the Start of the Season and Forgetting
The problem: removing suckers and pinching in June, but by August the plant has regrown new shoots that will not yield a crop but drain energy.
Why it is bad: peppers have continuous growth. If not controlled throughout the season, they constantly throw out new shoots that only divert nutrition from ripening fruits.
How to do it right: shaping is not a one‑time action but a process. Check bushes every 7–10 days. Remove newly appearing suckers below the fork, weak shoots at the top, and at the end of the season, all new flowers.

Peppers respond well to care but tolerate excessive intervention poorly. The best approach is observe, try, compare. If you are a beginner, run an experiment in your first year: shape one bed according to all rules, and leave another unshaped (except staking).
