Important: If after several days of hardening the leaves take on a purplish hue, it's not a problem. This is a reaction to low temperatures and mild phosphorus deficiency. Once planted in warm soil, the colour will recover.
What Not to Do During Hardening
1. Start too early. At temperatures below +8 °C and on young plants (under 4 leaves), hardening can cause bolting – plants will flower without forming a head.
2. Increase sun exposure abruptly. If you leave seedlings under direct sun for 6–8 hours on the first day, leaves will burn. Increase time gradually, monitoring plant condition.
3. Allow drying out. Outdoors, evaporation is stronger, so water more often but in small portions during hardening. Dried-out seedlings lose turgor and adapt poorly.
4. Harden overgrown seedlings. If seedlings are older than 50 days, have 7–8 leaves, and have already begun to form small buds – hardening will not help. Such plants usually produce small heads or bolt. Better to use them for early planting in protected ground or as greens.
5. Ignore the weather forecast. If frosts below –2 °C are announced, bring seedlings indoors or cover them with thick agrotextile in several layers. Even hardened plants can suffer from severe frost.
Summary Advice
Hardening is not just "taking plants outside," but a deliberate, gradual adaptation process. Start it 10–14 days before transplanting, when the plant has 4–5 true leaves. Increase outdoor time gradually – from 2–3 hours to a full day. Shade from direct sun in the first days, then gradually accustom to sun and wind. Monitor substrate moisture – outdoors, seedlings dry out faster.
The main sign of successful hardening: the seedlings stop wilting in the sun, leaves become firm and dark green. If this happens – you have done everything correctly, and the seedlings are ready for transplanting.
10. When Seedlings Are Ready for Transplanting
The readiness of broccoli seedlings for transplanting is determined not so much by the calendar as by the physiological condition of the plants and weather conditions. Choosing the right moment ensures rapid establishment, a strong start in the field, and ultimately a high yield of quality heads.
Visual Signs of Ready Seedlings
Refer to these indicators – they are universal for most varieties and regions:

Important note: Seedlings with 3–4 true leaves establish more easily than overgrown ones (with 7–8 leaves). Young seedlings adapt faster, produce stronger growth, and ultimately better quality heads. Overgrown seedlings are more prone to bolting, especially if cold weather follows transplanting (Basics of Broccoli Production, 2024; Swiader, 1992).
Calendar Guidelines by Region
Universal rule: Transplant when the soil at a depth of 10–15 cm warms to +10…+12 °C and the risk of severe frosts (below –3 °C) has passed.
Approximate dates for different climatic zones:

Frost Tolerance
Hardened broccoli seedlings withstand short frosts down to –2…–3 °C without significant losses. However, prolonged (more than a day) exposure to sub-zero temperatures or a drop to –5 °C can cause serious damage (Basics of Broccoli Production, 2024; Swiader, 1992).
When you can risk early transplanting:
- Seedlings have undergone a full hardening cycle (10–14 days).
- A short (no more than 1–2 days) cold snap to –2 °C is forecast.
- You have protective material (spunbond, agrotextile, film) for frost protection.
When not to risk:
- Seedlings are not hardened (grown in a warm room without exposure to air).
- A prolonged (more than 3–4 days) cold spell with temperatures below 0 °C is forecast.
- You are transplanting a variety prone to bolting at low temperatures.
Practical tip: If frost is forecast, cover the transplanted seedlings with thick spunbond (No. 42 or 60) in one or two layers. This protects plants down to –4…–5 °C. Remove the cover during the day when temperatures rise above +5 °C.
Soil Preparation for Transplanting
Good bed preparation is key to rapid establishment and a strong start.
1–2 weeks before transplanting:
1. Dig the soil to a depth of 20–25 cm, removing weed roots.
2. Apply compost (3–5 kg/m²) and a complete mineral fertiliser (e.g., nitrophoska – 30–40 g/m²).
3. On acidic soils (pH below 5.5), add lime or dolomite flour (200–300 g/m²) to bring pH to 6.5–7.0.
4. Prepare the bed and form holes or furrows according to the chosen planting scheme.
Planting scheme for broccoli:

Denser planting yields a greater number of heads, but they will be smaller. Wider spacing yields larger heads, but the yield per unit area is lower (Autko et al., 2012).
A day before transplanting: water the bed generously – moist soil warms up better and ensures good root-to-soil contact.
Transplanting Technique
1. Carefully remove the plant from the cell or cup, trying not to damage the root ball. If roots have tightly wrapped the clump, you can gently tease them apart with your fingers, but don't overdo it.
2. Make a hole deep enough to accommodate the root ball. The distance from the soil surface to the lower leaves should be the same as in the seedling container, or 1–2 cm deeper. Burying slightly stimulates the formation of additional roots.
3. Place the plant in the hole, fill with soil, and lightly firm around the stem to eliminate air pockets.
4. Water generously – 0.5–1 L of water per plant. Watering ensures close root-to-soil contact and initiates the establishment process.
5. In hot or sunny weather, shade the transplanted seedlings for 1–2 days (paper caps, agrotextile, branches) to protect against burns.
Special case: seedlings in peat pots. Plant together with the pot, burying it completely. Ensure the pot is well-soaked – before planting, water the hole and slightly tear the pot walls so roots can easily grow through.
Care Immediately After Transplanting
In the first 5–7 days after transplanting, seedlings are especially vulnerable. The main tasks are to help them establish and start growing.
Watering: Keep the soil constantly moist but not wet. In dry, hot weather, water daily (1–2 L per plant); in cool weather, less often, as the topsoil dries.
Cultivation: 5–7 days after transplanting, when plants have adapted, carry out the first cultivation between rows to a depth of 5–7 cm. This improves root aeration and destroys weeds.
Frost protection: If frost threatens, cover plants with spunbond. Remove the cover once it warms up.
Shading: If hot, sunny weather (above +25 °C) sets in after transplanting, keep shading for 3–5 days. Broccoli does not tolerate heat well in the initial stage.
Signs That Seedlings Have Established
- New, fresh leaves appear (usually 5–7 days after transplanting).
- Plants straighten up and become firm.
- Leaves regain a bright, dark green colour with no signs of wilting.
- Roots have begun to spread actively – the plant holds well in the soil when gently tugged.
Once the plants start growing, you can consider the seedlings successfully established. Further care (fertilizing, watering, pest control) is about supporting active vegetation and head formation.
Summary Advice
Transplant broccoli seedlings at 30–45 days of age, with 4–6 true leaves, when the soil has warmed to +10…+12 °C. Do not rush transplanting during prolonged cold spells – it's better to wait 5–7 days than to lose plants to frost or trigger bolting.
