How to Choose a Quality Seedling
A good raspberry seedling is a plant ready for rapid growth and development. When selecting, pay attention to the following signs.
Root System
The roots are the most important part of the seedling. They should be:
- Well‑developed and branched. A quality seedling has at least 3–4 main roots 10 to 15 cm long, densely covered with small absorbing rootlets (Yaroslavtsev, 2003).
- Fresh and firm. Roots should not be dry, wilted, or brittle. When bent, they should bend, not break.
- Light‑coloured on the cut. Healthy roots have a whitish or light‑cream colour on the cut. Dark, brown, or black colour indicates drying, disease, or freezing.
- Moist. Roots should not be dried out. Even brief drying noticeably reduces survival (Potapov et al., 2000).
Important: Do not buy bare‑root seedlings that have been stored without packaging for a long time or have dried roots. Even if the plant looks alive, its survival will be low.
Above‑ground Part
The shoots also indicate quality:
- Shoot thickness at the base – at least 6–8 mm for annual seedlings. Thinner shoots indicate poor development (Yaroslavtsev, 2003).
- Presence of 1–2 well‑developed shoots. The seedling should have one or two shoots with mature wood. The bark is smooth, without cracks or damage.
- Well‑developed buds. At the base of the seedling there should be 1–2 large, well‑formed buds (Yaroslavtsev, 2003).
- No leaves (for bare‑root seedlings). If the seedling is sold with leaves, they should be removed before planting to reduce moisture evaporation.
Overall Condition
Inspect the seedling as a whole:
- No mechanical damage – broken shoots, root breaks, bark injuries.
- No signs of disease – spots on the bark, swellings, coatings, rot traces.
- No pests – there should be no swellings (galls) on the roots, no traces of insect activity on the shoots.
- Freshness. The seedling should look alive, not dried out. Bark is firm, buds are plump.
Special Considerations for Container‑Grown Seedlings
Container plants are convenient, but they have their nuances:
- Roots should be circling the root ball but not protruding excessively through the drainage holes (this indicates the plant has been “over‑held” in the container).
- The substrate in the container should be moist but not waterlogged.

Where to Get Planting Material

- Protect from frost (if overwintering) – cover with dry leaves, spruce branches, or snow.

The best location is along a fence or wall on the south or south‑west side. If the raspberry patch is in an open area, provide windbreaks: a hedge, wooden shields, netting, or a fence. The barrier should slow the wind but not create dense shade (Kurennoi, 1985).
Water regime. Raspberries like moisture but cannot tolerate stagnant water or waterlogged roots. Groundwater should be at least 1–1.5 m from the surface (Dankov, 2015). In low‑lying areas where cold air and rainwater accumulate, raspberries will suffer – roots suffocate and develop root rot (phytophthora). If the site is wet, plant raspberries on raised beds 20–30 cm high so the root system is above excess moisture.
Soil. Raspberries prefer loose, fertile soils with good drainage. Ideal are light to medium loams with pH 5.5–6.5 (Yaroslavtsev, 2003). On sandy soils, raspberries suffer from lack of moisture and nutrients; on heavy clays, from waterlogging and poor aeration. In any case, improve the soil before planting: add organic matter; on sandy soils add clay and compost; on clay soils add sand and peat.
Predecessors. The best predecessors for raspberries are green manures (lupine, mustard, phacelia), legumes, and vegetables except nightshades (tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, eggplants). Nightshades leave pathogens of verticillium wilt, which is dangerous for raspberries. Do not plant raspberries after raspberries – soil fatigue accumulates, and diseases and pests build up. Return raspberries to the same place no earlier than after 2–4 years (Yaroslavtsev, 2003).
Planting Layout: Bush or Row (Strip) Method
There are two main approaches to placing raspberries – bush and row (strip) methods. The choice depends on your goals, plot size, and available labour.
Bush method. Plants are set as individual bushes at considerable distances – 1×1 m or even 1.8×1.8 m (Yaroslavtsev, 2003). Each bush is formed separately, leaving 4–6 fruiting canes and 4–6 replacement shoots. Suckers appearing between bushes are removed. Advantages: bushes are well ventilated, less disease‑prone, easy for hand care, each berry gets sun. Disadvantages: land is used less efficiently, yield per unit area is lower than with row planting.
Row (strip) method. Plants are planted in a row, and over time the row becomes a continuous strip of canes and shoots. Seedlings are placed in the row 30–70 cm apart, with 1.5–2.5 m between rows for access and mechanised cultivation. This method gives higher yields per area, is convenient for mechanisation, but requires more careful control of sucker spread and crowding (Yaroslavtsev, 2003).
Which method to choose? For a small garden plot with hand care, both bush and row methods work. If you plan to harvest many berries (for sale or processing), row planting is better. If you value ease of picking and plant health, the bush method is preferable, especially on wet sites where ventilation is important.
Spacing Between Plants and Rows
The specific distances depend on the shoot‑forming ability of the variety. This is the plant’s capacity to produce replacement shoots and root suckers. Varieties with high shoot‑forming ability fill the row faster and are planted more sparsely. Those with low ability are planted more densely to build the row sooner.

Important note: For the bush method, distances between bushes should be at least 1–1.2 m, and between rows 1.5–2 m. In the row method, the row can be formed at a density of 10–12 canes per metre of row at fruiting age (Yaroslavtsev, 2003). Therefore, in the planting year, plant more densely (30–50 cm) so that by the third year you achieve the desired density.
Row Orientation
Rows of raspberries are best oriented north‑to‑south. With this alignment, plants receive uniform illumination throughout the day – the sun lights both sides of the row alternately. This is especially important for row plantings where bushes form a “green wall”. With east‑west orientation, one side of the row is constantly shaded, reducing yield and berry quality (Yaroslavtsev, 2003).
If the site has a slope, orient rows across the slope (along the contour lines). This prevents soil erosion and better retains moisture. On flat sites, strict compass orientation is not mandatory, but rows should be parallel for ease of cultivation.
What to Do with the Aisles
Between rows, leave enough space for your comfort. For hand work, the minimum aisle width is 1.2–1.5 m. If you plan to use a motor‑cultivator or mini‑tractor, leave 1.8–2.5 m so that machinery can pass freely (Yaroslavtsev, 2003).
Aisles need not be left empty. You can:
- Keep them as black fallow – regularly cultivate and remove weeds. This conserves moisture and nutrients for the raspberries.
- Sow grass – periodically mow and leave the clippings as mulch. Grass suppresses weeds and improves soil structure.
- Grow green manures (mustard, phacelia) in the first 1–2 years before the raspberries have filled out (Yaroslavtsev, 2003).
Important: Young suckers that appear in the aisles should be regularly removed so that the row does not spread and become overgrown. If you neglect this, after a few years the patch will turn into impenetrable thickets – yield will drop and picking will become impossible.
Limiting Root Spread
The raspberry root system is aggressive – it sends out suckers far beyond the row. If you do not want the raspberry patch to “invade” neighbouring beds, plan for barriers.
The simplest and most reliable method is to bury slate, sheet metal, roofing felt, or thick plastic film along the edges of the row to a depth of 50–60 cm, with 10–15 cm above ground (Yaroslavtsev, 2003). This mechanically blocks the roots. Install such barriers before planting, when preparing the trench.
If you plant raspberries along a fence, you can sink the barrier right next to the foundation or along the property line.
Laying Out the Site Before Planting
Before digging holes or trenches, mark out the area. Do this:
1. Determine the row direction (north–south or across the slope).
2. Measure the required distance from the edge (usually 70–100 cm from the fence or boundary).
3. Stretch a string along the first row.
4. Mark planting spots at the chosen within‑row spacing. Use pegs or simply make marks.
5. Mark all rows parallel to the first with the chosen between‑row spacing.
For many rows, use a marking cord and tape measure. For large plantings (farm‑scale), markers or special marking machines are used (Kurennoi, 1985).
Other Considerations
- Row length. In home gardens, rows are usually 5–10 m. Rows longer than 20–30 m are inconvenient for care and picking. If space allows, make several short rows separated by paths.
- Provision for trellis. Think ahead where and how you will install supports. Spacing between posts along the row – 5–8 m; end posts should be stronger with braces (Yaroslavtsev, 2003). A trellis greatly facilitates care and increases yield, so plan it from the start.
- Access for wheelbarrows or carts. If you will apply fertilisers or transport harvest, leave a through passage between rows or at the end of the patch.
- Crop rotation. If you practise “mobile” plantings, allow space to shift rows by 1–1.5 m sideways after several years (Yaroslavtsev, 2003).

Understanding Raspberry Roots
To prepare the planting site, you need to picture the raspberry root system. The bulk of raspberry roots are in the topsoil – down to 30 cm, with maximum concentration at 10–20 cm depth and within a radius of 30–60 cm from the bush centre (Dankov, 2015). This means raspberries take most of their nutrients and water from the upper, most fertile layer. But roots can go deeper – up to 1.5 m in search of water, especially in loose soils.
Hence the main tasks when preparing the planting site:
1. Create a loose, fertile layer 30–40 cm deep where the main roots will develop.
2. Provide a reserve of nutrients for the first 2–3 years of growth.
3. Ensure good drainage – roots must not sit in water.
4. Remove weeds, especially perennial rhizomatous ones (couch grass, sow thistle), which will compete with raspberries.
Holes or Trenches: Which to Choose
Raspberries can be planted in individual holes or in trenches (furrows). The choice depends on the planting method, number of seedlings, and your convenience.
Holes – the classic option for bush planting where bushes grow separately. Hole size: depth 40–50 cm, width 40–60 cm. Holes are convenient for small plots, but they take more time per spot.
Trenches (furrows) – the best choice for row planting, where plants are set in a line. Dig a trench along the entire row, 40–50 cm deep and 50–70 cm wide (at the top edge) (Yaroslavtsev, 2003). A trench allows even distribution of fertilisers along the row, uniform soil preparation, and, importantly, creation of root barriers.
If you are planting many plants (e.g., 10–20 seedlings or more), the trench method saves time and effort.
When to Start Preparation
Ideally, 2–4 weeks before planting – or even better, 2–3 months ahead. The soil needs time to settle, especially if you have deep‑dug or added a lot of organic matter. If you prepare the site immediately before planting, the soil will settle later, and the root collar may end up deeper than intended – which is harmful for raspberries.
Best of all, prepare planting spots in advance, in autumn, even if planting is planned for spring. Over winter, the soil will “mature”, fertilisers will disperse, and in spring you only need to plant.
Depth and Width: General Approach
The planting hole or trench must be spacious enough for the roots. A seedling with spread roots should fit freely; roots should not be bent upward or tangled.

Improving the Soil at the Bottom of the Trench
The soil at the bottom of the trench is often compacted, especially on long‑untilled plots. Loosen it with a spade (20–25 cm) so roots can penetrate deeply. If there is a “plough pan” – a compacted layer at 20–30 cm – break it up with a fork or crowbar (Kurennoi, 1985).
On heavy clay soils where water stagnates, place a drainage layer at the bottom of the trench – 8–10 cm of crushed stone, broken brick, or expanded clay, with a thin layer of sand (5–8 cm) on top (Yaroslavtsev, 2003). This ensures excess water drains away and prevents root rot.
On sandy soils that dry out quickly, the opposite is needed. Here, lay a moisture‑retaining layer at the bottom: loam (5–8 cm thick) and a layer of peat (10–12 cm) (Yaroslavtsev, 2003). This will help retain moisture in the root zone, especially during dry periods.
Fertilisers: What and How Much to Apply
Raspberries are demanding in fertility. Over 8–10 years, they remove a lot of nutrients from the soil, and the best way to supply them is to build a reserve before planting. Organic and mineral fertilisers are placed in planting holes or trenches and thoroughly mixed with the soil.
Organic fertilisers – the main source of nutrition for raspberries. They improve soil structure, increase water‑holding capacity, and feed beneficial microorganisms. Per 1 m² of planting area (hole or trench) add:
- Well‑rotted manure or compost – 8–12 kg/m² (Yaroslavtsev, 2003)
- Or compost – 10–15 kg/m²
Important: Fresh manure must not be applied directly under the roots – it can burn them. Only well‑rotted manure (2–3 years old).
Mineral fertilisers complement the organics. Their rates depend on your soil fertility.

Nitrogen fertilisers are not applied at planting! Nitrogen stimulates shoot growth but hinders rooting. If applied in autumn, plants may start growing and fail to prepare for winter. In spring planting, nitrogen is also not needed – the plant first needs to grow roots, not shoots. Nitrogen fertilisers are given only 2–4 weeks after planting, once plants have rooted.
How to mix correctly. Apply fertilisers to the bottom of the hole or the lower part of the trench, thoroughly mixing with the soil (the top fertile layer). Do not dump fertilisers in a concentrated layer – they should be evenly distributed in the soil so that roots meet them gradually as they grow.
Dealing with Soil Acidity
Raspberries prefer slightly acidic soils with pH 5.5–6.5 (Yaroslavtsev, 2003). If the soil is more acidic (pH below 5.0), raspberries will absorb nutrients less well, especially phosphorus and calcium, and will be more prone to disease.
If you do not know your soil pH, get a test. It is simple: dig several small holes on the site (5–10), cut a thin slice of soil from each vertical wall, mix the samples, and send to an agrochemical laboratory (or use a quick test kit). If pH is below 5.5, apply lime one month before planting:
- For light soils – 200–300 g of dolomite flour per 1 m²
- For heavy soils – 400–500 g per 1 m²
Important: Lime and fertilisers are applied at different times, because calcium (lime) binds phosphorus, making it unavailable to plants. First apply lime, dig it in, and after 2–3 weeks apply fertilisers.
Filling the Trench: Step‑by‑Step
Proper filling is as important as digging. Here is a step‑by‑step guide.
1. Remove soil from the trench, separating it into two parts: the top fertile layer (15–20 cm) and the lower layer (the rest). When filling, use the top layer first – it is most fertile.
2. At the bottom (if needed) place drainage or moisture‑retaining material.
3. Return the top fertile soil to the trench to about 2/3 of its depth, thoroughly mixing it with the fertilisers.
4. Compact the soil with your foot or lightly pat with a spade to prevent excessive settling after planting.
5. Water the trench so the soil settles and compacts naturally.
6. Leave the prepared trench for 2–4 weeks to settle. During this time, the soil will settle, and you can accurately determine the final planting depth.
When planting, set roots 2–3 cm deeper than the level at which they grew in the nursery (Yaroslavtsev, 2003). Use the old soil mark on the stem (usually visible) or the root collar as a guide.
Mulching and Black Plastic Film
Immediately after planting (or even before), mulch the soil surface around the plants. This accomplishes several tasks:
- Retains soil moisture
- Suppresses weed growth
- Prevents surface crust formation
- Protects roots from overheating and overcooling
Mulch options for raspberries:
- Black polyethylene film – effectively suppresses weeds and suckers between bushes. Lay the film along the row, make cross‑shaped cuts over each seedling, and pull the shoots through. Weigh down the edges with soil (Yaroslavtsev, 2003). However, film does not let water through, so water through the cuts.
- Opaque mulch paper – an eco‑friendly alternative that lets water through.
- Organic mulch – compost, rotted sawdust, straw, mown grass – a layer 5–10 cm. Organics feed the plants, improve soil, but weeds may penetrate a thin layer.
- Mown green manures – green mass of legumes or grasses – an excellent option if you have sown aisles with grasses.
Mulching is especially important in the first year after planting, when the root system is still weak and plants are sensitive to drying out (Pritts & Hanson, 2013).
If the Soil Is Heavily Infested with Perennial Weeds
