1. Why Prune a Plum Tree?

Many novice gardeners view pruning as an optional or even harmful procedure. However, for plums—as for most fruit trees—pruning is not merely desirable but absolutely essential. Without it, a tree quickly loses productivity, and its lifespan is shortened dramatically. Let's examine what tasks proper pruning accomplishes.

Regulating Growth

Unlike apples and pears, which are usually pruned during dormancy, plums and other stone fruits should be pruned after the start of the growing season, when buds have already begun to swell. This is a crucial rule related to the tree's physiology: winter wounds on stone fruits heal poorly and become entry points for dangerous infections, particularly the pathogens of silver leaf disease and bacterial canker (Westwood, 1993). Spring pruning, when tissues are already actively functioning, promotes rapid wound healing.

Pruning allows you to restrain excessive growth. Plums, especially on vigorous rootstocks, tend to produce vigorous shoot growth, leading to crown density. The gardener's main task is to channel this growth energy in the right direction: toward building a strong framework and establishing fruiting wood. By shortening branches, we stimulate dormant buds to break and produce lateral shoots, from which fruiting structures later develop (Potapov et al., 2000).

Crown Illumination

Light is the primary energy source for a fruit tree. In a dense crown, where sunlight penetrates only the peripheral parts, inner branches gradually become bare, leaves grow smaller, and lose their capacity for effective photosynthesis. Fruits formed in the shade are smaller, have poorer coloration, and accumulate less sugar (Martin, 2019).

Thinning the crown creates so-called "light corridors"—spaces through which sunlight reaches the lowest and innermost parts of the tree. This promotes the formation of fruiting wood not only at the periphery but also in the center of the crown, significantly increasing overall yield and fruit quality (Agusti, 2010).

Productivity

In plums, as in other stone fruits, flower buds are formed primarily on the previous year's growth and on perennial bouquet spurs. Without pruning, the tree ages faster: old, unproductive branches die off, and the fruiting zone shifts to the periphery. Yields decline, and fruit quality deteriorates (Tarasov et al., 1981).

Regular pruning maintains a balance between vegetative growth and fruiting within the crown. It stimulates the formation of new, strong shoots—the foundation for future harvests. In varieties prone to density, thinning prevents the tree from being overloaded with fruit, which also contributes to larger, higher-quality fruit (Kurennoi et al., 1985).

Extending Tree Lifespan

An aging tree is one with weakened growth and reduced yields. When the length of annual growth decreases to 15–20 cm, it's a signal: it's time for rejuvenation pruning. This stimulates dormant buds on old branches to awaken, giving the tree a "second life" (Potapov et al., 2000).

Furthermore, sanitary pruning—removing diseased, damaged, and dead branches—prevents the spread of diseases and pests. This not only extends the tree's productive period but also maintains its health.

2. Tree Structure

Before picking up pruning shears, it's important to understand the parts of a fruit tree and how they function. This knowledge transforms pruning from intuitive guesswork into a deliberate management of growth and fruiting.

Central Leader

The central leader is the main vertical trunk, which continues the tree's upward growth. In apples and pears, it is often retained throughout the tree's life (forming a central-leader or modified-leader crown). However, with plums—as with most stone fruits—the approach is different.

Plum is a light-loving tree. If the central leader is left intact, the upper part of the crown heavily shades the lower branches, leading to bare wood and reduced yields. Therefore, with plums, the central leader is removed in the first few years after planting, forming a so-called open-center (vase-shaped) crown without a central leader (Potapov et al., 2000; Tarasov et al., 1981). An open center ensures even penetration of sunlight into all parts of the crown, which is particularly important for stone fruits.

In some cases (e.g., with pyramidal-crown varieties), a modified-leader system is acceptable, where the central leader is retained for 3–4 years to build the framework and then removed (Kurennoi et al., 1985). However, for most home gardeners, the classic choice is the open center.

Scaffold Branches (First-Order Branches)

These are the main, most powerful branches that form the entire framework of the crown. For plums, 3–5 scaffold branches are typically retained, evenly distributed around the trunk (like spokes of a wheel). The spacing between them should be sufficient so they do not interfere with each other in the future.

A critically important parameter is the angle of attachment of a scaffold branch to the trunk. The optimal angle is 45–60° (Westwood, 1993). Why is this so important?

  • At an angle less than 45°, the branch grows too vertically, competes with the leader (while it exists), and forms a weak union at the trunk attachment point. Under the weight of fruit, such a branch easily breaks off, leaving a deep wound.
  • At an angle greater than 90° (almost horizontal), the branch weakens in growth, making it difficult to develop as a fully functional scaffold.

The angle of attachment is established when shaping a young sapling and can be corrected using spreaders or tying. The wider the angle, the stronger the union between branch and trunk and the better its light exposure (Martin, 2019).

Secondary Branches (Second-Order Branches)

These are branches that grow from the scaffold branches. They do not bear the main structural load, but they carry the bulk of the fruiting wood. Secondary branches should be shorter and weaker than scaffold branches—their role is to fill the crown volume without competing with the main branches.

When forming the crown, ensure that secondary branches do not grow inward (direct them outward) and do not cross each other. The recommended spacing between them is about 30–40 cm (Tarasov et al., 1981). In aging trees, secondary branches are gradually replaced with new ones—this is the basis of rejuvenation pruning.

Fruiting Wood

This is the smallest "working" material of the crown—thin twigs located on secondary and scaffold branches. It is on these that flower buds are formed and develop. Fruiting wood in plums includes two main types of structures:

  • Bouquet spurs (fruiting spurs) — very short (1–5 cm) twigs with a cluster of flower buds at the tip. They are perennial, living 5–8 years in plums, producing a crop each year (Agusti, 2010). These are the main source of fruit for most European plum varieties.
  • Spurs — short (5–15 cm) twigs with lateral flower buds. These are more common in Chinese and American plum varieties.

In plums, fruiting structures live significantly longer than in peaches (where they die off after only 2–3 years). However, with age, the productivity of bouquet spurs declines, so their periodic renewal is an important pruning task (Kurennoi et al., 1985).

Fruiting Structures and Bud Types

To prune correctly, you need to distinguish between two types of buds:

  • Vegetative (growth) buds — elongated, pointed, tightly pressed to the shoot. New shoots and leaves grow from these.
  • Generative (flower) buds — rounded, larger, slightly protruding from the shoot. In plums, they are usually solitary (producing one flower and one fruit), or occasionally grouped (2–3 per node) (Potapov et al., 2000).

Important difference from apples: in apples, flower buds are mixed (from one bud, both flowers and a shoot develop), whereas in plums, they are simple (from a flower bud, only a flower develops). Therefore, if all the buds on a plum shoot are generative, the shoot may become completely bare and die after fruiting. This is precisely why it is so important to reserve vegetative shoots for replacement.

Visualization for the Gardener

Imagine the tree as a three-level structure:

1. Foundation — the trunk and 3–5 scaffold branches (the framework).

2. Floors — secondary branches (fill the space).

3. Roof — fruiting wood with bouquet spurs and spurs (where the crop is produced).

What we do:

  • For a one-year-old sapling (a "whip"), cut back the central leader at a height of 50–70 cm from the ground (Tarasov et al., 1981). This stimulates buds in the lower part of the trunk to break and develop into future scaffold branches.
  • If the sapling already has side branches, select 3–4 of the strongest and most evenly spaced ones, and cut them back by 1/3 of their length. Remove competitors and weak twigs.
  • In the first year, also remove any flowers (if they appear)—this allows the tree to direct energy toward rooting and building vegetative mass (Martin, 2019).

Why this works: Shortening stimulates vegetative buds to break, from which new shoots develop. Without this pruning, the sapling will grow upward, forming a single long trunk with few side branches—a shape unsuitable for an open-center crown.

3.2. Selecting the Main Branches

By the second year, the sapling typically develops several strong side shoots. Our task is to select from these the future "skeleton" of the crown.

Criteria for selecting scaffold branches:

1. Number: leave 3–4, rarely 5 branches. Any more would lead to crowding (Agusti, 2010).

2. Spatial distribution: branches should be evenly distributed around the trunk (about 90–120° apart around the circumference to avoid lopsidedness).

3. Height from ground: the lowest scaffold branch should start no lower than 40–60 cm from the soil surface, to avoid interfering with cultivation of the root zone later (Potapov et al., 2000).

4. Angle of attachment: as noted, 45–60°. If the angle is too narrow, use spreaders or ties to correct it (Westwood, 1993). This is especially important for stone fruits—narrow-angled branches form weak unions with the trunk and often break under crop load.

5. Growth vigor: all scaffold branches should be of roughly equal strength, so none dominates and shades the others. Weaker branches are cut back more severely than stronger ones to balance their development (Kurennoi et al., 1985).

Important: at this stage, remove all branches growing upward (competing with the leader), inward, or crossing each other. Also, do not allow two scaffold branches to emerge from the trunk at the same height (this creates a weak point—a so-called "fork"). The vertical spacing between them should be at least 10–15 cm (Tarasov et al., 1981).

3.3. Shaping the Crown Form

As already noted, for plums the preferred form is the open-center (vase-shaped) crown. This option has many advantages: good light penetration, ease of harvest, simplicity of care, and tree longevity.

Shaping plan by year:

Year 2 (after planting):

  • Having selected 3–4 scaffold branches, cut them back by about 1/3 of their length, cutting to an outward (or lateral) bud. This stimulates branching and the development of secondary branches. Shorten the central leader above the top scaffold branch—this begins the formation of the open center (Potapov et al., 2000). Ensure the top scaffold branch is directed outward.
  • Remove all other shoots that have grown on the trunk below the first tier—cut them off completely at the collar.

Year 3:

  • On each scaffold branch, select 2–3 well-positioned secondary branches at about 30–50 cm from the trunk. Cut these back by 1/3–1/2 of their length. Keep the center of the crown open—remove any branches growing inward.
  • Continue to balance the vigor of scaffold branches (weaker ones cut back more, stronger ones less).

Year 4–5:

  • The crown now has its basic structure. In subsequent years, perform maintenance pruning: thin crowded areas, remove narrow-angled branches, and keep the center open.
  • By 5–6 years, crown shaping is essentially complete, and the tree begins to bear fruit (Tarasov et al., 1981; Kurennoi et al., 1985).

Additional technique to hasten fruiting:

For vigorous plum varieties, to stimulate the formation of flower buds, you can use branch bending to a horizontal or near-horizontal position. This reduces vegetative growth and encourages branches to transition into a fruiting state (Martin, 2019). Bending is done in spring or summer, when branches are most flexible, by securing them with ropes or weights.

Key takeaway: The first five years of a plum's life are when you build a strong crown framework. Careful selection and shaping of scaffold branches with proper attachment angles will ensure longevity and high yields for decades to come.

4. Maintenance Pruning

Once the crown is shaped, the gardener's main task is to keep the tree in a state of active growth and annual fruiting. This is achieved through regular maintenance (regulatory) pruning. Unlike formative pruning, which follows a set plan, maintenance pruning is an ongoing process that requires understanding the condition of each specific tree.

4.1. What Is Maintenance Pruning and Why Is It Necessary?

Maintenance pruning is a system of annual (or biennial) interventions aimed at:

  • Regulating growth vigor — stimulating the production of new shoots where needed and restraining overly vigorous growth.
  • Thinning the crown — removing excess, crowding branches to ensure good light penetration and air circulation.
  • Renewing fruiting wood — replacing old, unproductive fruiting twigs with new ones.
  • Preventing crop overload — regulating the number of flower buds to obtain large, high-quality fruit.

Without maintenance pruning, the plum quickly "goes wild": the crown becomes dense, fruit shrinks, yields drop, and the tendency toward biennial bearing intensifies (Kurennoi et al., 1985).

4.2. Basic Techniques: Thinning and Heading Back

Maintenance pruning uses two basic techniques—thinning (removing branches entirely) and heading back (partial removal of a shoot or branch). Each has its own purpose and effect.

Thinning

What we do: Remove the branch completely, "at the collar"—that is, at the branch bark ridge at its base (Westwood, 1993).

When to apply:

  • To remove branches growing inward, crossing, or rubbing against each other.
  • To reduce density—removing some shoots where there are too many.
  • To remove weak, diseased, dead, or damaged branches.
  • To remove branches with narrow attachment angles, which are weakly anchored and unreliable.
  • To remove old, unproductive secondary branches that no longer produce quality fruit.

Tree response: Thinning improves light penetration inside the crown without strongly stimulating growth. The remaining branches receive more light and nutrients, promoting better development of fruiting structures on them. However, thinning alone does not stimulate new shoot production, so it should be combined with other techniques (Potapov et al., 2000).

Technique: The cut should be made exactly along the outer edge of the branch collar (the swelling at the branch base). Leaving a stub will cause it to dry out and may become a source of infection. Cutting too deeply will result in a larger wound that will take longer to heal (Tarasov et al., 1981).

Heading Back

What we do: Cut off a portion of a shoot or branch. The degree of heading back can be light (removing up to 1/4 of length), moderate (removing 1/4–1/3), or severe (removing more than 1/3) (Kurennoi et al., 1985). Important: when heading back plums, always cut above a bud facing outward (so the new shoot grows in the desired direction). The cut should be angled, about 0.5–1 cm above the bud.

When to apply:

  • To stimulate new shoots from dormant buds (especially in aging trees).
  • To balance branch vigor—weaker branches are cut back more, stronger ones less.
  • To renew fruiting wood—heading back long annual shoots stimulates branching and flower bud formation.
  • To regulate crop load—removing some flower buds on shoots.

Tree response: Heading back stimulates shoot growth near the cut. The harder the heading, the stronger the regrowth response. However, the effect is localized: it mainly affects the branch being cut and does not impact other parts of the crown. Additionally, heading back can delay the onset of fruiting by 1–2 years, as it directs energy into vegetative growth (Martin, 2019).

Important for plums: unlike apples, you cannot severely head back all shoots every year on plums. This stimulates excessive vegetative growth at the expense of fruiting. Heading back should be applied selectively: for varieties with weak shoot formation—more often and more severely; for well-branching varieties—less often and more lightly (Agusti, 2010).

4.3. Combining Techniques

Experienced gardeners use both techniques together:

  • First, perform thinning—remove everything excessive that shades the crown or unnecessarily crowds it.
  • Then do heading back—on the remaining branches, stimulate the desired growth.

This approach keeps the crown in balance between vegetative growth and fruiting.

4.4. Regulating Fruiting

Plum fruiting characteristics to consider:

1. In most plum varieties, flower buds are set on annual shoots (next year's crop) and on bouquet spurs (perennial structures). Therefore, pruning must take into account both the current year's growth and the preservation of productive bouquet spurs (Kurennoi et al., 1985).

2. Plums often produce excessive fruit set, leading to small fruit and overloaded branches. Regulatory pruning helps reduce the number of flower buds at the setting stage or remove some of the fruitlets (Potapov et al., 2000).

3. In many varieties (e.g., Chinese and Ussurian plums), fruiting is mainly on annual growth. These varieties require more intensive pruning to annually stimulate strong new shoots. In European varieties (European plums), most of the crop is borne on bouquet spurs, so pruning should be gentler, preserving these structures (Tarasov et al., 1981).

Practical recommendations for crop regulation:

  • Annually remove 15–20% of old fruiting twigs, replacing them with new shoots. This ensures continuous renewal of fruiting wood.
  • For varieties with excessive fruiting (when there are too many flowers and fruit set), thin the fruitlets manually or by early pruning (after flowering, when fruits are pea-sized). Leave one fruit per 5–7 cm of shoot length (Westwood, 1993).
  • For varieties prone to biennial bearing (heavy crop every other year), in the "on" year, do heavier heading back to reduce flower buds; in the "off" year, do light pruning to stimulate shoot growth for the next year's crop (Agusti, 2010).

4.5. Additional Technique: Removing Water Sprouts

Water sprouts are vigorous vertical shoots that often appear after heavy pruning or injury to the tree. They consume a lot of nutrients but produce almost no fruit. They should be removed early in their growth (green operations), when they can be snapped off easily without leaving wounds. If the opportunity is missed, water sprouts are cut off at the collar during the next winter or spring pruning (Potapov et al., 2000).

Rejuvenation pruning is a radical but effective measure that can return an old tree to a "second youth," extending its productive period by 5–10 years or more (Potapov et al., 2000).

5.1. When Is It Necessary?

The main signal for rejuvenation is the length of annual growth on scaffold and secondary branches (Westwood, 1993). If it consistently does not exceed 15–20 cm, the tree is losing its ability to produce new shoots—and with them, the ability to set quality flower buds.

Other signs of aging:

  • Branches in the central and lower parts of the crown become bare; fruiting wood dies off.
  • Fruit becomes smaller, color pales, sugar content drops.
  • The crop is mainly on the outermost, peripheral areas of the crown, which is characteristic of severe crowding (Kurennoi et al., 1985).
  • Numerous vertical shoots (water sprouts) appear at old cut sites and at branch bases—the tree is trying to regenerate, but often unsuccessfully without the gardener's intervention (Agusti, 2010).

Important: rejuvenation should be carried out with a high level of agricultural care—with adequate watering, fertilization, and disease protection. A weakened tree may not cope with such a stress (Martin, 2019). Therefore, before starting rejuvenation, it is advisable to apply fertilizers and ensure the tree has moisture.

5.2. Basic Principles of Rejuvenation Pruning

Principle of Gradualness

Rejuvenation is a process extended over 2–3 years. Do not try to cut everything at once. In a single season, remove no more than 25–30% of the total living wood (Westwood, 1993). If you cut too much, the tree will produce a flush of water sprouts but will weaken and may even die. It's better to do rejuvenation in stages, starting with the oldest and most unproductive branches (Potapov et al., 2000).

Principle of "Cut to a Strong Lateral Shoot"

Rejuvenation involves cutting back branches to the point where there is still a strong lateral shoot (or at least well-developed dormant buds). The cut is made to a lateral—to a side branch directed outward from the crown, or to a pair of well-developed vegetative buds (Tarasov et al., 1981).

For example, if a scaffold branch is bare for 1 m from the trunk but then has a strong side shoot, keep that as the continuation and remove everything above it. This stimulates the development of that side shoot, which gradually replaces the old axis (Martin, 2019).

Principle of Stimulating Dormant Buds

Rejuvenation works because severe heading back awakens dormant buds at the base of old branches. These produce new, vigorous shoots that become the basis for new framework and fruiting wood within 2–3 years (Westwood, 1993). It's important to leave enough healthy buds on the branches for the tree to recover.

Recommended Degree of Heading Back

  • When growth is 15–25 cm — head back to 2–3-year-old wood (i.e., cut off part of the current growth and the previous year's wood).
  • When growth is 10–15 cm — head back to 4–5-year-old wood.
  • When growth has nearly ceased (growth < 5–10 cm) — head back to 6–8-year-old wood or even to the branch base, if there are well-developed dormant buds or side shoots on it (Kurennoi et al., 1985).

Managing Water Sprouts

Rejuvenation pruning often produces many water sprouts. Do not remove them all at once, as these will become the new framework and fruiting wood. Select the strongest and best-positioned ones (about 3–5 per large branch) and remove the rest. Water sprouts growing inward or vertically upward should be removed (Martin, 2019).

5.3. Restoring Old Trees

For neglected trees that have not been pruned for a long time, a restorative (sanitary and rejuvenating) pruning is required. Procedure:

1. First year: sanitary pruning. Remove all dead, diseased, broken, and clearly unproductive branches, as well as branches that interfere with access (hanging to the ground or crossing with neighbors). Also remove all water sprouts from the center of the crown.

2. Second year: lightening and height reduction. Thin crowded areas, reduce tree height to 3–3.5 m by cutting back top scaffold branches to side branches. Remove inward-growing branches. Carry out selective heading back to 3–5-year-old wood on the oldest and most unproductive parts (Potapov et al., 2000).

3. Third year: final rejuvenation. Perform deeper heading back of remaining old branches (to 6–8-year-old wood), and shape new structural elements from the strongest water sprouts. After this, the tree should have completely transitioned to new growth (Westwood, 1993).

Important notes:

  • Large cuts (diameter over 1–1.5 cm) must be covered with grafting wax or a special sealant to prevent infection and gum bleeding (especially important for plums) (Tarasov et al., 1981).
  • Rejuvenation is best done at the start of the growing season, when the tree is actively growing (April–May in temperate zones), so wounds heal faster (Kurennoi et al., 1985).
  • Rejuvenation significantly increases yield and fruit size, but in the first year after heavy pruning, the crop may be reduced—this is normal, as the tree directs energy toward recovery.

6. Timing of Pruning

Choosing the right time for pruning is one of the key factors for success. For plums and other stone fruits, this issue is especially critical, as a wrongly chosen time can not only cost you the harvest but also kill the tree.

6.1. The Golden Rule for Stone Fruits

Unlike apples and pears, which are pruned during dormancy (winter or early spring before sap flow), plums, cherries, sweet cherries, apricots, and peaches should be pruned after the start of the growing season, when buds have already begun to swell (Westwood, 1993). This fundamental difference is related to stone fruit physiology.

Why this is so important:

  • In stone fruits, wounds inflicted during dormancy heal very slowly. Through unhealed cuts, pathogens of dangerous diseases enter the tissues—most notably, silver leaf (Chondrostereum purpureum) and bacterial canker (Pseudomonas syringae). These diseases can kill the entire tree (Potapov et al., 2000).
  • In spring, when active sap flow begins, the tree quickly forms callus (a tissue overgrowth) at the cut site, which prevents infection entry. Wounds heal faster and with fewer consequences.
  • Additionally, spring pruning allows you to assess the condition of overwintered buds: if the winter was harsh, some flower buds may have died. By pruning after bud break, you can see how many flower buds survived and more precisely regulate the tree's load (Kurennoi et al., 1985).

6.2. Spring Pruning—the Main Season

Best time: late March–April (in southern regions—early March, in northern—mid-April–May), when stable warm weather has set in (above +5°C), but buds have not fully opened, or have just begun to swell, or even show green tips (Westwood, 1993). In central Russia, the optimal period is roughly from mid-April to early May (Tarasov et al., 1981).

What to do in spring:

  • Formative pruning of young trees (first 3–5 years). This is when the crown structure is established.
  • Sanitary pruning—removal of frost-damaged, broken, or diseased branches after winter.
  • Regulatory pruning—thinning and heading back to maintain the balance of growth and fruiting.
  • Rejuvenation pruning of old trees, if needed.

Why spring is the main time:

  • Wounds heal quickly.
  • The condition of buds and branches after winter is clearly visible.
  • The tree has the entire season to recover and form new growth.
  • Spring pruning stimulates shoot growth in the current season (Martin, 2019).

6.3. Summer Pruning—Auxiliary but Important

Summer pruning is done in June–July, when shoots are actively growing but main growth has nearly ended (Potapov et al., 2000). Its goal is not to stimulate but to restrict and direct growth.

What to do in summer:

  • Pinching—removing the tips of overly vigorous shoots (above 4–6 leaves). This halts their growth, encourages lateral branching, and promotes flower bud formation (Tarasov et al., 1981).
  • Removing water sprouts, especially those growing inside the crown. In summer, they are easy to snap off while still not lignified.
  • Thinning fruit set, if the tree is overloaded (manually or with shears). This allows remaining fruit to grow larger and of better quality.

  • Spring pruning: mid-April–early May, after the threat of late frosts has passed, but buds have not yet opened or have just begun to swell (Kurennoi et al., 1985). During this period, cuts heal quickly and infection risk is minimal.
  • Summer pruning: June–July (more specifically, late June–mid-July), when shoots have reached 30–50 cm in length but are not yet lignified (Westwood, 1993). For temperate zones, summer pinching is especially important due to the short growing season: it allows energy to be redirected toward wood maturation.

Northern regions (Urals, Siberia, northwest Russia):

  • Spring pruning: late May–early June, once stable warm weather has set in and the threat of severe frosts has passed. Plums in these regions are often grown in creeping or bush forms for frost protection, and pruning should be as gentle as possible (Potapov et al., 2000).
  • Summer pruning: July–August, to remove shoots that will not mature before winter.
  • Winter pruning is excluded—even during thaws, there is a high risk of frost damage to tissues.

General recommendation for all regions: do the main pruning in spring, when sap flow has begun but buds have not yet opened—this is the universal "golden window" for plums (Tarasov et al., 1981). Use summer pruning as an additional tool for growth control, and avoid autumn and especially winter interventions as much as possible.

Why it's bad:

  • A stub (left above the collar) dries out, the bark dies back, and fungi and bacteria enter through the resulting crack. Over time, the stub can cause a hollow to form (Tarasov et al., 1981).
  • A deep cut (removing the collar) creates a large wound surface that will heal very slowly. Such wounds often "bleed" gum, weakening the tree and attracting pests (Potapov et al., 2000).

How to do it right:

  • When removing a branch, make the cut along the outer edge of the branch collar—the swelling at the branch base. This is where the cells that form callus (healing tissue) are located (Westwood, 1993).
  • Do not leave stubs and do not cut "flush" with the trunk—a precise cut at the collar ensures rapid healing (Tarasov et al., 1981).
  • For large branches (over 3–4 cm in diameter), remove them in three steps to avoid bark tearing (Martin, 2019):
  • First undercut from below, 1/4–1/3 of the diameter, about 20–30 cm from the trunk (to prevent the saw from binding).
  • Second cut from above, 3–5 cm further from the trunk than the first undercut—the branch will break at the undercut without damaging the trunk bark.
  • Remove the remaining stub with a "collar" cut.
  • When heading back, make all cuts above a bud or side branch directed outward. The cut should be angled, 0.5–1 cm above the bud, sloping away from it so water does not collect and cause rot (Tarasov et al., 1981).

7.6. Neglecting Wound Dressing

Mistake: Leaving large cuts (over 2 cm in diameter) without dressing, especially on stone fruits.

Why it's bad: In plums, large wounds are prone to gum bleeding—copious secretion of sticky sap. This weakens the tree, attracts pests, and promotes disease development. Additionally, an unprotected wound heals more slowly and can become an entry point for infection (Westwood, 1993; Tarasov et al., 1981).

How to do it right:

  • All cuts over 1.5–2 cm in diameter must be covered with grafting wax, a special sealant, or oil-based paint on natural linseed oil (do not use synthetic-based paints!).

  • Attention: do not apply dressing immediately after pruning if it is wet outside—allow the cuts to dry for 1–2 hours in dry weather. In rainy weather, postpone dressing until a dry period (Kurennoi et al., 1985).

7.7. Pruning Without Considering Variety and Rootstock Characteristics

Mistake: Applying the same pruning strategy to all plum varieties.

Why it's bad: Varieties differ greatly in growth vigor, fruiting type, and response to pruning. For example, Chinese and Ussurian plums bear on annual shoots, so they are pruned more intensively to stimulate new shoot growth.
