1. Why Raspberries Need Training and Pruning

The raspberry harvest forms on second-year canes (floricanes) for summer-bearing varieties, or on first-year canes (primocanes) in late summer for fall-bearing (everbearing) types (Dankov, 2015). Without pruning, old, fruited canes not only take up space but also shade young shoots and compete with them for nutrients and water. Removing spent canes immediately after harvest allows the plant to redirect resources toward the next season's crop (Crandall, 1994). Research shows that proper shoot density regulation—leaving the optimal number of canes per unit of row length—directly increases berry size and overall plantation productivity (Funt, 2013).
Light. Raspberries are sun-loving plants. In dense plantings, canes become leggy and thin, while berries become smaller and lose sugar content. Sunlight is essential for photosynthesis, sugar production, and fruit coloring (Yaroslavtsev, 2003). Thinning and removing excess canes ensures uniform light penetration throughout the bush, from base to tip. Well-lit plants set more flower buds, and berries ripen more evenly (Cornell Guide).
Ventilation. Dense, poorly ventilated thickets are the ideal environment for fungal diseases like gray mold (botrytis), purple blotch, and anthracnose (Rieger, 2010). Fungal spores thrive in humid, stagnant air. Pruning that opens up the bush and removes diseased canes improves air circulation. Leaves and berries dry faster after rain or irrigation, significantly reducing disease pressure. Better ventilation also improves access for pollinating insects (Tarasov, 1981).
Longevity of Plantings. Without systematic rejuvenation and pruning, a raspberry plantation ages faster. The root system depletes over time, fewer replacement shoots emerge, and yields decline. Proper training extends the productive period of plantings to 8–10 years, helping maintain high yields of quality berries (Yaroslavtsev, 2003). Timely replacement of old canes with new ones is key to the longevity of a raspberry patch.
In summary, pruning and training tackle multiple goals: improving yield and berry quality, maintaining plant health, and extending the productive life of your raspberry plantation. When you begin pruning, remember that every action should have a clear rationale—not be a random removal of branches.
2. Shoot Biology and Its Importance for Pruning
To make raspberry pruning meaningful rather than chaotic, it’s important to understand how this shrub grows and functions. The above-ground part of the raspberry follows a strict two-year cycle, and all pruning techniques are built around this principle.
Two Types of Canes — Two Destinies
The above-ground part of a raspberry consists of two categories of canes, which differ in age and function (Rieger, 2010).
1. Primocanes – are the current season’s shoots that emerge in spring from the root system or root suckers. In their first year, they grow in length and thickness, form flower buds in the leaf axils, but do not bear fruit (for summer-bearing types). By autumn, primocanes become woody and enter winter (Dankov, 2015).
2. Floricanes – are the same canes, but in their second year. In spring, buds that developed the previous summer produce fruiting laterals, which form flowers and berries. After fruiting, the floricanes die—this is their natural end (Cornell Guide). A floricane is easy to identify: it has gray, often peeling bark and dry side branches after harvest.
Thus, each raspberry cane lives for two growing seasons: the first as a primocane (growing), the second as a floricane (fruiting and dying). This is the key to understanding pruning (Crandall, 1994).
Where New Canes Come From
Raspberries reproduce and renew themselves in two main ways:
- Replacement canes – emerge from buds on the root system (the perennial underground part) of the same plant. They ensure the continuity of the plant's life.
- Root suckers – arise from adventitious buds on horizontal roots, which can spread up to 1–2 meters from the parent plant. These are often the culprits that create thickets by spreading across the garden (Yaroslavtsev, 2003).
In nature, raspberries tend toward density, but for a good harvest, you need to regulate the number of both primocanes and floricanes, as they compete for light, water, and nutrients. If you do not remove excess suckers, the planting becomes a jungle, berries shrink, and diseases thrive (Funt, 2013).
The Difference Between Summer-Bearing and Fall-Bearing Varieties is Crucial!
Here lies the most important practical takeaway for the gardener.
- Summer-bearing (non-remontant) raspberries fruit only on floricanes—second-year canes. The harvest is collected in June–July. After this, the floricanes are cut to the ground, and the primocanes that grew over the summer are left for the following year—they will become the new floricanes. Pruning these varieties consists of removing spent canes and regulating young shoots (Tarasov, 1981).
- Fall-bearing (remontant) raspberries are capable of fruiting on primocanes—in late summer–early autumn of the same year. In such varieties, the crop forms on the upper part of the first-year canes, while the lower part can, if desired, produce berries in the second year (in spring). This opens up the possibility of a single pruning—mowing down all canes to the ground in late autumn or early spring. Then, the following year, new primocanes grow and produce a crop by autumn. This method eliminates the need to deal with two-year-old canes and dramatically reduces disease and pest pressure (Dankov, 2015; Yaroslavtsev, 2003). However, in regions with short summers, this autumn crop may not fully ripen—in that case, fall-bearing varieties are grown using the classic scheme (like summer-bearers) to get a summer harvest on overwintered canes.
How Biology Dictates Timing and Pruning Techniques
Knowing this biology gives us clear guidelines:
- After the summer harvest (for summer-bearers), immediately remove all spent floricanes. This gives light and space to the young primocanes, which still need to grow and set buds for the next year. Delaying this operation is harmful—old canes shade and weaken the young ones (Crandall, 1994).
- In spring (before bud break), do the final shoot density regulation: leave a certain number of the strongest primocanes from the previous year per bush or meter of row—they will become the fruiting floricanes. Remove all weak, thin, broken, or frost-damaged canes.
- For fall-bearing varieties, the strategy depends on your goal: either mow everything down in autumn to get one autumn crop (later, but cleaner from diseases), or leave some canes for spring fruiting and get two harvests (but with more complex management).
Practical Takeaway for the Gardener
You cannot approach raspberry pruning with a one-size-fits-all method. Always first determine whether your variety is fall-bearing or not. Then assess the age of each cane. Your goal is to leave only the strongest, healthiest canes of the right age for fruiting, and remove everything else (old, diseased, weak, crowding). Raspberries will reward you with large, sweet berries and a long-lived plantation.

3. Forming Young Plantings
The first year of a raspberry's life in a new location is the foundation upon which all future fruiting will be built. Proper pruning and training during this period set the direction of growth, determine the number of future fruiting canes, and establish the health of the entire plantation.
Immediately After Planting: The First Pruning of the Sapling
When a raspberry sapling is planted in the ground, its above-ground part must not be left untouched. Even if you bought a sturdy, tall cane, it needs to be shortened.
How to do it right:
Leave 2–3 well-developed buds above the soil surface, cutting away the rest of the stem (Tarasov, 1981; Yaroslavtsev, 2003). The height of such a stub is typically 20–25 cm from the ground.
Why this works:
- A young plant after transplanting expends a lot of energy on establishing roots. If you leave a long cane, it will lose moisture through its leaves and try to grow upward, diverting resources from root development.
- Short pruning stimulates dormant buds on the root system to awaken, from which strong replacement canes will grow in the very first summer—these will become the foundation of the future bush.
- Removing the upper part of the sapling (often where flower buds are already set) allows all nutrients to be directed toward producing new, healthy primocanes (Crandall, 1994).
First Summer: Observation and Light Correction
During the first growing season, the main task is to let the plant strengthen and build a good root system.
- No formative pruning of primocanes is done (Funt, 2013). New canes should grow freely, gain height and thickness, and set buds for the future harvest. Topping the tips in summer for summer-bearing varieties only weakens growth and can lead to excessive branching, which crowds the bush and delays wood ripening (Cornell Guide).
- Only weak, diseased, or damaged canes are removed (sanitary pruning). If a cane begins to wilt or is broken by wind, cut it at the base so it doesn't become a source of infection.
- For varieties with very low shoot production (e.g., 'Kaliningradskaya', 'Kokinskaya'), a light pinching of the tips of replacement shoots in early summer (when they reach 60–90 cm) is sometimes used. This encourages side branch growth, increasing the overall fruiting area the following year (Yaroslavtsev, 2003). However, for most regionalized varieties, this operation is not mandatory and is done only at the gardener's discretion to broaden the canopy.
During this period, it's important to regularly remove all root suckers that appear outside the designated strip (if you're forming a row) or between bushes (in hill planting). Leave only those that grow in the right direction and do not crowd the future row. This is the first step of shoot density regulation (Crandall, 1994).
Autumn of the First Year: Preparing for Winter
If you planted a summer-bearing variety, no pruning is done in autumn. The primocanes that grew over the summer are left to overwinter. They can be bent to the ground and covered with snow (for frost protection), but the canes themselves are not shortened—the tips carry important flower buds.
If you planted fall-bearing raspberries, in the very first year, an autumn crop may form on the tips of the primocanes. After harvesting these berries and the onset of sustained frosts, you can either cut all the above-ground parts to the ground (to get only an autumn crop the next year) or leave these canes for a second year for early summer fruiting, then remove them. The choice of strategy depends on your climate and goals—more on this in the chapter on fall-bearing raspberries (Dankov, 2015).
Second Year: Forming the Framework
Early in spring, before buds break, begin the final shoot density regulation of the bush.
- Remove all weak, thin, broken, or frost-damaged canes—they will not yield a good crop and will only consume nutrients.
- From the remaining ones, select the strongest, with a base diameter of at least 1 cm (Funt, 2013). The number depends on the growing method:
- For hill (bush) method, leave 4–6 canes per bush (Tarasov, 1981; Yaroslavtsev, 2003).
- For row (ribbon) method, leave 10–12 canes per meter of row (Cornell Guide; Crandall, 1994).
- These canes will bear fruit in the current summer. They are now called floricanes.
- Shorten the tips of the floricanes by 15–20 cm (to a well-developed bud) or to about 1.5–1.8 m height (depending on trellis height). This improves light exposure on the remaining part of the stem, stimulates lateral fruit branch development, and increases berry size (Crandall, 1994; Funt, 2013). Pruning more than 1/4 of the cane height is not recommended, as it reduces yield (Funt, 2013).
At the same time, remove all root suckers growing between bushes or outside the row—they are only useful for propagation, not for fruiting.
What to Do with Two-Year-Old Saplings
Sometimes, saplings with two canes are sold—one of them is already a year old (a floricane) and may flower in the planting year. But for forming a strong plant, it's better to remove this floricane, leaving only the young primocanes. Otherwise, the plant will expend energy on fruits instead of root establishment.
The Main Principle of Forming in the First Years
During the first two years, you are establishing the framework of your future raspberry patch. Each year, you leave only the strongest, healthiest canes in the right number and remove everything extra. By the third year, the bush enters full production, and its yield directly depends on how well you performed this initial training.
The next chapter is dedicated to pruning mature summer-bearing raspberries—here the rules become even more precise and regular.
4. Pruning Summer-Bearing (Non-Remontant) Raspberries
Summer-bearing (non-remontant) raspberries produce their main crop on second-year canes—floricanes. This means your primary task is to annually replace the spent canes with new, strong primocanes that will bear fruit the following season. Pruning here follows a clear annual cycle, and every stage is important.
Annual Pruning Cycle for Summer-Bearing Raspberries
1. Spring Pruning (Before Bud Break)
In spring, you work with the canes that have overwintered—these are the future floricanes. They no longer grow in height, but will produce lateral fruiting branches.
What to do:
- Remove all dead, frost-damaged, broken, and obviously diseased canes. Winter damage is visible as blackened bark or dry tips (Yaroslavtsev, 2003). Cut them back to living tissue, or if the cane is completely dead, remove it at the base.
- Perform final shoot density regulation (see Chapter 6). Leave only the strongest, healthiest canes with a base diameter of at least 1 cm (Funt, 2013). Their number:
- For hill (bush) method – 4–6 per bush.
- For row (ribbon) method – 10–12 per meter of row (Cornell Guide; Crandall, 1994).
- Shorten (tip) the tops of the remaining canes. Remove approximately the top 15–20 cm, cutting back to a well-developed, overwintered bud (Crandall, 1994). If the variety tends to have drooping tips (e.g., 'Novost Kuzmina'), prune at the bending point—this increases stem stability and berry size (Yaroslavtsev, 2003). The tips of floricanes are where berries often become smaller and ripen later, so removing them improves the quality of the remaining crop. Important: do not remove more than a quarter of the total cane height, or you will significantly reduce yield (Funt, 2013). The optimal height after pruning is about 1.5–1.8 m (convenient for harvesting and ensures good light).
Why in spring rather than autumn? In regions with harsh winters (zones 5–6), it's better to delay pruning until spring. In autumn, you don't yet know which canes will be damaged by frost, and leaving "extra" canes helps trap snow and protect the root system (Funt, 2013). In warmer regions (zone 8), you can prune in autumn, but spring pruning allows for an accurate assessment of winter damage.
2. Summer Pruning – After Harvest
Immediately after you have picked the last berries, cut all spent canes (floricanes) at ground level, as low as possible (Cornell Guide; Crandall, 1994).
Why it's important to do this without delay:
- The old canes are no longer needed—they have already served their purpose and will soon die anyway. But while they stand, they shade the young primocanes that are actively growing at this time. Shading weakens them, delays wood ripening, and reduces flower bud formation for the next year (Rieger, 2010).
- Removing floricanes improves air circulation in the lower part of the bush, reducing the risk of fungal diseases (gray mold, leaf spots) (Cornell Guide).
- The earlier you remove the old canes, the more light and nutrients the young shoots receive, so they will grow stronger and more productive in the next season.
Technically, this is done by cutting the stem 2–3 cm below the soil surface with pruners or a knife. Immediately remove the cut canes from the site—they can harbor diseases and pests (Tarasov, 1981). Leaving them in the rows can promote the spread of raspberry beetle and other pests.
3. Summer-Autumn Density Regulation of Young Primocanes
Simultaneously with removing old canes or slightly later (in June–July), you carry out density regulation of the current year's young shoots (primocanes).
Leave only the strongest and most appropriately positioned ones, and remove all weak, thin, crooked ones, as well as those growing too close together or outside the row. This prevents overcrowding and allows the remaining canes to build good mass (Yaroslavtsev, 2003). The number of primocanes left should roughly match the number of floricanes you plan to leave in spring (10–12 per meter of row or 4–6 per bush).
This is especially important for varieties with high shoot production—if you skip this step, the raspberry patch will become an impenetrable jungle by autumn (Cornell Guide).
Special Cases and Nuances
Varieties with low shoot production (e.g., 'Kaliningradskaya', 'Kokinskaya', 'Sputnitsa'). They produce few canes, so density regulation mainly involves removing only obviously diseased or broken ones—every healthy cane counts (Yaroslavtsev, 2003).
Varieties with drooping tops (e.g., 'Novost Kuzmina', 'Aloi Parus'). In spring, they are shortened at the natural bending point—this helps the stem stay upright under the weight of the crop and prevents lodging (Yaroslavtsev, 2003).
Standard (compact) varieties—they have strong, upright canes and may not require a trellis. Pruning is standard, but density regulation is somewhat stricter to avoid overloading the bush.
What Not to Do with Summer-Bearing Raspberries
- Do not shorten primocanes in their first year of life. This reduces their growth and bud set, thus lowering the next year's yield. The exception is pinching for varieties with very poor branching, but this is a specific technique, not a standard requirement (Funt, 2013).
- Do not leave spent canes until spring (unless you live in a very harsh winter zone where old canes serve as snow retention—but even then, they should be removed early in spring before bud break) (Cornell Guide).
- Do not allow overcrowding—dense plantings not only reduce yield but also encourage disease.
Summary Scheme for Memory
Spring (before bud break): remove frost-damaged, leave 4–6 / 10–12 strong canes, shorten tops by 15–20 cm.
Summer (immediately after berry harvest): cut all old canes to the ground.
Summer–Autumn (during primocane growth): remove weak and excess young shoots, leaving the desired number of the strongest.
Winter: bend down the remaining primocanes to the ground for frost protection (in cold regions).
By following this rhythm, you will get a stable harvest of large, healthy berries every year, and your raspberry patch will stay young and productive for many years.

5. Pruning Fall-Bearing (Remontant) Raspberries
Fall-bearing (remontant) raspberries are a different story. Their main advantage is the ability to bear fruit on first-year canes (primocanes) in late summer–early autumn. This fundamentally changes the pruning approach and gives the gardener a choice of strategy depending on climate and personal goals.
Two Pruning Strategies for Fall-Bearing Raspberries
In fall-bearing varieties (e.g., 'Hercules', 'Babie Leto', 'Abrikosovaya', 'Heritage', 'Autumn Bliss'), the crop forms on the upper third to half of the primocane in the year it grows (Dankov, 2015). The lower part of the same cane can overwinter and produce a summer crop in the second year (like summer-bearing raspberries). Thus, you can choose one of two paths.
Strategy 1. One Crop per Year (Autumn) – Complete Mowing
What to do: In late autumn, after sustained frosts and the complete harvest of the autumn crop, cut all canes at ground level (to a height of 2–5 cm). In spring, new primocanes grow, which by late summer–early autumn will produce an abundant crop (Dankov, 2015; Funt, 2013).
Why this works:
- The plant does not expend energy on overwintering old canes and spring regrowth, but immediately directs resources to the vigorous growth of new shoots.
- Mowing removes nearly all overwintering stages of pests and pathogens (purple blotch, raspberry beetle, shoot gall midge)—the plantation stays clean, and the need for chemical treatments is drastically reduced (Yaroslavtsev, 2003).
- There is no need for complex density regulation, tying, or bending canes for winter—greatly simplifying care.
Drawbacks: The ripening time shifts to late summer–autumn. In regions with short, cool summers (northwest Russia, Siberia, zones 3–4), part of the crop may not ripen before frost (Dankov, 2015). In such cases, the autumn crop will be incomplete, and this strategy may not be justified.
Optimal regions: Southern regions, the middle belt with long warm autumns, USDA zones 5–7 (where autumn is long enough).
Strategy 2. Two Crops per Year (Summer + Autumn)
What to do: In spring, leave the overwintered canes of the previous year—they will produce a summer crop (June–July) on the lower part, like ordinary summer-bearing raspberries. After harvesting these berries, remove the old canes, and the new primocanes that grew over the summer will produce an autumn crop on their tips. Thus, from one area, you get two waves of berries (Yaroslavtsev, 2003).
How to prune:
- In early spring, do sanitary pruning of the overwintered canes: remove frost-damaged and weak ones, shorten the tops to living tissue (as with summer-bearing varieties).
- Regulate the floricanes: leave 4–6 per bush or 10–12 per meter of row (Cornell Guide).
- After the summer harvest, immediately cut the spent canes to the ground.
- During the summer, regulate the young primocanes, leaving the strongest ones (they will produce the autumn crop). Topping the tips in June (at 60–90 cm height) can increase branching and the number of flower clusters, but in cool regions, it delays ripening, so use with caution (Funt, 2013).
Pros: Two harvests per season, maximum utilization of the variety's potential.
Cons: Care is more complex (two pruning waves, pest and disease management due to the simultaneous presence of old and young canes), the second autumn crop is usually smaller and has smaller berries than with the complete mowing strategy, and it may suffer from early frosts (Dankov, 2015).
Optimal regions: Regions with a long warm season, where berries ripen even under a two-crop regime. For colder zones, this strategy is risky.
Pinching (Topping) to Increase Yield
In some fall-bearing varieties, especially those with low shoot production, summer pinching of primocane tips (when the cane reaches 60–90 cm) is used. This induces the growth of side branches, which also set berries, increasing the overall yield. However, in short-summer conditions, this technique can delay ripening and cause part of the crop not to mature, so it is used selectively, only on the earliest and earliest-ripening varieties (Yaroslavtsev, 2003; Funt, 2013).
Choosing a Strategy – Practical Advice
For most gardeners in the middle belt of Russia and similar climatic zones, the most reliable and simple strategy is complete mowing to the ground in late autumn. You get a disease-free raspberry patch, large berries in late August–September, and minimal labor. If you want berries in summer too, plant a few separate bushes of summer-bearing varieties—they will provide the summer harvest, while the fall-bearing ones will delight you in autumn.
In southern regions (USDA zones 7–8), you can try the two-crop regime, but remember that the autumn harvest will be less abundant.
Timing of Mowing
Autumn pruning (mowing) is done after the leaves have completely fallen and sustained freezing temperatures have set in (usually in October–November). Don't rush—if you cut too early while the canes are still green, it weakens the plant and reduces the following year's yield (Funt, 2013). In spring, if you didn't manage in autumn, you can cut the canes before bud break—the effect will be the same.
Density Regulation in the Two-Crop System
If you chose the two-crop path, spring density regulation of floricanes is done the same as for summer-bearing varieties (see Chapter 4). In summer, regulate the primocanes, leaving roughly the same number (10–12 per meter of row) so they don't shade each other and ripen well by autumn.
Summary
Fall-bearing raspberries offer the gardener flexibility. By choosing between one autumn crop or two harvests, you adjust the complexity of care and the timing of berry availability. The main thing is to know exactly which variety you have and stick to your chosen strategy year after year.

6. Shoot Density Regulation (Thinning)
Shoot density regulation is perhaps the most important technique in raspberry care, often underestimated or skipped by many gardeners. It involves removing excess canes to leave the optimal number per unit area (bush or meter of row). Without this, raspberries inevitably become overcrowded, and yields drop sharply.
Why Regulate Shoot Density
Raspberries naturally tend to produce a large number of replacement canes and root suckers. In natural thickets, this helps the species survive, but in cultivated plantings, an excess of stems leads to negative consequences:
- Competition for light. In an overcrowded raspberry patch, canes stretch, become thin, and their leaf apparatus works less efficiently. Fewer flower buds are set, and they develop poorly (Cornell Guide).
- Competition for water and nutrients. A large number of stems per unit area requires far more resources than the soil can supply, even with good fertilization. As a result, all canes receive less nutrition, berries become smaller, and the overall yield decreases (Yaroslavtsev, 2003).
- Poor ventilation and increased disease. Dense foliage does not aerate well, creating a humid microclimate ideal for gray mold, anthracnose, and other fungal infections (Rieger, 2010).
- Reduced berry quality. In crowded conditions, berries ripen smaller, less sweet, and are often affected by disease (Funt, 2013).
- Difficult harvest. In dense thickets, berries are hard to find, get damaged during picking, and part of the crop may remain unharvested.
Density regulation solves these problems by directing the plant's resources to a limited number of the strongest canes, which will produce large, healthy berries.
Optimal Number of Canes
The exact numbers depend on the growing method and the vigor of the variety, but there are generally accepted recommendations backed by years of practice and research.
For the Hill (Bush) Method
Each bush is formed from a group of canes growing from one root system.
- Summer-bearing and fall-bearing (under the two-crop system): leave 4–6 of the strongest canes per bush (Tarasov, 1981; Yaroslavtsev, 2003).
- In some guides, up to 8 canes per bush are allowed for very vigorous varieties, but generally 4–6 is the optimal balance between yield and quality (Crandall, 1994).
For the Row (Ribbon) Method
Canes are distributed as a continuous strip along the row.
- Summer-bearing and fall-bearing (under the two-crop system): leave 10–12 canes per meter of row (Cornell Guide; Crandall, 1994; Funt, 2013).
- In some intensive systems with good nutrition and irrigation, up to 15–20 canes per meter are allowed, but this requires a very high level of agrotechnics and is more common in commercial plantings (Yaroslavtsev, 2003). For home gardening, 10–12 is a reliable norm.
Important exception: for fall-bearing raspberries under the complete mowing strategy (one autumn crop), density regulation is not required in spring. Canes grow freely, and their number is only limited by natural crowding, but even then, in mid-summer, weak and diseased stems are removed to improve ventilation (Funt, 2013).
Timing of Density Regulation
Regulation is carried out in several stages throughout the season.
1. Spring Regulation (Main)
Done early in spring, before bud break, when winter damage is clearly visible. At this time:
- Remove all frost-damaged, broken, thin, and diseased canes.
- From the remaining ones, select the strongest, with a base diameter of at least 1 cm (about the thickness of a pencil) (Funt, 2013).
- Select the required number (4–6 per bush or 10–12 per meter of row) and remove all others, cutting them at ground level.
- At the same time, shorten the tops of the remaining canes (as described in Chapter 4).
Why in spring: only after winter can you see which canes are truly viable. Autumn regulation may be wrong if the winter was severe (Cornell Guide; Crandall, 1994).
2. Summer Regulation (Removing Excess Shoots)
During the summer (May–June), regularly remove excess root suckers and weak replacement canes. Do this when they reach a height of 5–10 cm, cutting them just below the soil surface or pulling them out (Yaroslavtsev, 2003).
Why: The earlier you remove excess shoots, the more nutrients and light remain for the retained canes. If you wait until mid-summer, these extra shoots will have already consumed a significant portion of the plant's resources.
- For the hill (bush) method, remove all suckers growing between bushes.

- Stem thickness – at least 1 cm at the base. Thin canes will not produce large berries (Funt, 2013).
- Height – canes should be roughly the same height so the bush is evenly lit. Remove those that are too tall or too short.
- Health – bark without spots, cracks, or signs of disease. Remove any canes with signs of purple blotch, anthracnose, or pest damage (Cornell Guide).
- Position – canes should be evenly distributed across the bush or along the row, not shading each other. The distance between neighboring stems should be at least 10–15 cm (Yaroslavtsev, 2003).
Features for Varieties with Different Shoot Production
- Varieties with high shoot production (e.g., 'Kirzhach', 'Lazarevskaya', 'Meteor') produce many suckers and replacement canes. They require stricter regulation to prevent overcrowding (Yaroslavtsev, 2003).
- Varieties with low shoot production (e.g., 'Kaliningradskaya', 'Kokinskaya', 'Sputnitsa') produce few canes. Here, regulation mainly consists of removing only obviously diseased and damaged ones—every healthy cane is valuable (Yaroslavtsev, 2003). For such varieties, when using the row method, the plants are spaced more closely (every 30–35 cm) to compensate for weak shoot formation.
What Happens in the Absence of Regulation
If you do not regulate shoot density, within 2–3 years the raspberry patch turns into a dense thicket where:
- Berries become smaller (1.5–2 times smaller than with regulation) (Crandall, 1994).
- Yields drop by 30–50% or more (Funt, 2013).
- Plants are severely affected by fungal diseases, especially in rainy years.
- Canes become thin, weak, and winter less well.
- Harvesting becomes extremely labor-intensive and inefficient.

Sanitary pruning is the removal of all diseased, damaged, dry, broken, and frost-damaged parts of the plant. Unlike formative pruning, which addresses yield and plant structure, sanitary pruning is primarily focused on the health of the entire plantation. It is a mandatory annual procedure for all types of raspberries—both summer-bearing and fall-bearing.
Why Sanitary Pruning is Needed
Diseased and dying canes are not just useless ballast. They become breeding grounds for infections and shelter for overwintering pests.

- Improved ventilation and light. Even a single diseased cane in the center of a bush can create shade and hinder air circulation, promoting disease in neighboring healthy stems.
- Preventing virus spread. Some viral diseases (e.g., mosaic, raspberry bushy dwarf) are transmitted by sap-sucking insects and can move through the plant. Affected canes should be removed quickly to prevent the virus from reaching the root system and spreading to other canes (Rieger, 2010).
- Increased winter hardiness. Weak, diseased, or damaged canes ripen less well and are more susceptible to frost. Removing them reduces the load on the root system and allows the plant to direct resources toward winter preparation.
When to Perform Sanitary Pruning
Unlike formative pruning, sanitary pruning is not tied to a strict season—it is done as needed throughout the growing season. However, there are key periods when it is particularly important.
1. Early Spring (Before Bud Break)
This is the main stage of sanitary pruning. After winter, you can clearly see which canes have suffered from frost, mechanical damage, or diseases.
- Remove all canes with blackened, cracked, or peeling bark.
- Cut back frost-damaged tips to living tissue (if only the tip is damaged).
- Completely remove canes that are frozen to the base or show signs of purple blotch or anthracnose (Funt, 2013; Crandall, 1994).
Important: immediately burn or remove the cut canes from the site—they should not be used as mulch or added to compost, as fungal spores and pest eggs can survive even after partial decomposition (Tarasov, 1981).
2. Summer (After Harvest for Summer-Bearing Varieties)
Immediately after fruiting, remove all spent canes—they are also potential sources of infection (see Chapter 4). At the same time, inspect young primocanes and cut out those affected by diseases or pests.
- Signs of shoot gall midge—swellings (galls) on stems, visible as early as June–July. Remove and burn such canes (Cornell Guide).
- In case of severe purple blotch (purple spots on the bark), remove diseased canes even if they haven't fruited yet—they will not produce a good crop and will infect neighbors (Yaroslavtsev, 2003).
3. Autumn (For Fall-Bearing Varieties)
Under the complete mowing strategy, sanitary pruning is combined with the main pruning—all canes are removed, automatically eliminating all sources of infection. This is one of the main advantages of this method (Dankov, 2015).
If you leave fall-bearing raspberries for two crops, then in autumn, be sure to remove all spent tips and canes with signs of disease.
4. Continuous Monitoring Throughout the Season
Regularly inspect your plantings during summer. If you find canes infested with pests or with clear signs of disease (wilting, spots, growths), remove them immediately, without waiting for a scheduled pruning. This prevents infection from spreading to healthy plants.
Signs That a Cane Should Be Sanitarily Removed
Remember these symptoms—when you see them, remove the cane without hesitation:
- Frost cracks and bark fissures—especially on the lower part of the stem. Weak bark is an entry point for infections.
- Purple–violet or brown spots on the bark—characteristic of purple blotch (Didymella applanata). Spots gradually enlarge, bark cracks, and buds die (Cornell Guide).
- Gray or brown cankers (sunken spots)—anthracnose (Elsinoe veneta) or gray mold on canes (Botrytis cinerea). Such canes will not produce quality berries (Rieger, 2010).
- Wilting of tips or individual fruiting branches—often caused by the raspberry cane borer or shoot gall midge. Upon close inspection, feeding damage by larvae may be visible at the base of the wilted part (Yaroslavtsev, 2003).
- Swelling (galls) on stems—shoot gall midge. Larvae overwinter inside these swellings and emerge in spring to infect new shoots.
- Hollow, brittle stems—inside they may have been eaten out by larvae (e.g., raspberry stem fly). Such stems lose strength and break easily.
- Mosaic leaf discoloration (yellowish patches on green background)—viral disease. Remove the affected cane completely, and sometimes even the entire bush if the virus has spread widely (Rieger, 2010).
- Dieback of bark at the base of the stem—may indicate verticillium wilt or crown rot. Such plants often die completely and should be removed along with the roots (Cornell Guide).
Sanitary Pruning Technique
- Tools—pruners or a garden knife must be sharp to make a clean cut without ragged bark. Fewer wounds mean less chance for infection. When moving from diseased to healthy plants, disinfect the tool (with alcohol or a potassium permanganate solution) to avoid spreading infection.
- Make the cut at the very base, 2–3 cm below the soil surface. Do not leave stubs—they rot and serve as a source of infection.
- Immediately remove all cut diseased canes from the site and burn them (Tarasov, 1981). Composting diseased plant debris is unacceptable—spores of many fungi can survive even incomplete decomposition.
- During pruning, try not to damage neighboring healthy canes.
Features for Different Raspberry Types
- Summer-bearing raspberries: spring sanitary pruning is mandatory. After harvest, remove all spent floricanes, which often already show signs of disease by autumn.
- Fall-bearing raspberries (complete mowing): sanitary pruning is essentially unnecessary, as all canes are removed in autumn. This is a huge advantage from a phytosanitary perspective (Dankov, 2015).
- Fall-bearing raspberries (two crops): sanitary pruning is done the same as for summer-bearing varieties—in spring and after each harvest.
Why Neglecting Sanitary Pruning is Harmful
Neglecting sanitary pruning leads to the accumulation of diseases and pests in the plantings year after year. Within 2–3 years, the raspberry patch is affected by a complex of infections, yields plummet, and berries lose marketable quality and taste. Controlling rampant pests and diseases requires repeated chemical treatments, reducing the environmental friendliness of the crop and increasing costs. Sanitary pruning is the simplest, cheapest, and most environmentally friendly way to prevent most problems.

In this chapter, we'll cover the most common pitfalls—so you can avoid them and get the most from your raspberry patch.
Mistake 1. Pruning All Canes to the Same Height Without Considering Their Condition
What it is: The gardener walks along the row and shears all stems to the same height, say 1.5 m, without looking at how each individual cane overwintered.
Why it's wrong: The tips of canes may have frozen unevenly. If you cut them all to the same height, you will either leave frozen sections (which will not produce) or cut too much from healthy canes, losing a significant portion of flower buds (Funt, 2013).
How to do it right: In spring, prune each cane individually—down to the first well-developed, living bud from the top. Remove only the frozen or damaged part. If the cane is frozen to the base, cut it out completely (Crandall, 1994; Yaroslavtsev, 2003).
Mistake 2. Severely Shortening Canes (More Than 25% of Height)
What it is: The gardener shortens the stems by half or more, thinking it will stimulate branching and increase yield.

The exception is regions with very harsh winters, where old canes can serve as snow retention, but even then, they should be removed early in spring before bud break (Funt, 2013).
Mistake 4. Neglecting Density Regulation or Doing It Incorrectly
What it is: The gardener leaves all the canes that grew, thinking "the more stems, the more berries."
Why it's wrong: Overcrowded plantings produce small, sour berries, suffer greatly from diseases, and the yield per unit area is lower than with proper regulation. Plants compete for light, water, and nutrients, and as a result, there are not enough resources for forming large fruits or for proper wood ripening (Cornell Guide; Yaroslavtsev, 2003).
How to do it right: Strictly follow the recommended norms: 4–6 canes per bush or 10–12 per meter of row (depending on the growing method) (Tarasov, 1981; Crandall, 1994). Remove excess shoots regularly during the summer, not waiting until autumn.
Mistake 5. Mowing Fall-Bearing Raspberries Too Early or Too Late
What it is: The gardener cuts fall-bearing raspberries too early (while the canes are still green and haven't dropped leaves) or, conversely, delays pruning until spring and then forgets to do it.
Why it's wrong: Early mowing weakens the plant—nutrients that should have gone to the root system are removed with the stems. This reduces the following year's yield (Funt, 2013). If mowing is delayed until spring, the canes may start growing, and you will either damage them during pruning or miss the window for the autumn crop.
How to do it right: Mow fall-bearing raspberries late in autumn, after sustained frosts, when leaves have completely fallen and growth has ceased (Dankov, 2015). If you didn't manage in autumn, you can cut them early in spring before bud break (Funt, 2013). But don't delay: once buds begin to swell, it's too late.
Mistake 6. Pruning Primocanes in Their First Year (for Summer-Bearing Varieties)
What it is: The gardener shortens or pinches young shoots of the current year, thinking it will cause branching and increase yield.
Why it's wrong: For summer-bearing varieties, primocanes must grow freely during their first summer—it is on them that flower buds are set for next year's crop. Shortening stimulates side shoot growth, but this delays wood ripening, weakens the plant, and often results in the buds not forming completely (Funt, 2013; Cornell Guide).
How to do it right: Do not touch primocanes in their first year, except for cases of obvious disease or damage (sanitary pruning). The only exception is pinching for varieties with weak branching, but that is a specific technique, not standard practice (Yaroslavtsev, 2003).
Mistake 7. Leaving Stubs When Cutting Canes
What it is: The gardener cuts a cane at a height of 5–10 cm from the ground, leaving a protruding stub.
Why it's wrong: Leftover stubs eventually rot, become sources of infection, and provide shelter for pests. They also hinder the growth of new replacement canes from buds on the root system (Tarasov, 1981).
How to do it right: Cut stems at ground level or 2–3 cm below the soil surface. Use sharp pruners to make a clean, even cut (Crandall, 1994).
Mistake 8. Wrong Strategy for Fall-Bearing Raspberries
What it is: The gardener tries to get two harvests from fall-bearing raspberries in a region with a short summer, but the autumn crop doesn't ripen, while the summer crop is poor.
Why it's wrong: Fall-bearing varieties left for two crops produce a summer crop on overwintered canes (like summer-bearers), but it is usually smaller and with smaller berries than specialized summer varieties. The autumn crop is also delayed and may not ripen. In the end, you get two weak harvests instead of one substantial one (Dankov, 2015).
How to do it right: In regions with short, cool summers, choose the complete mowing strategy—one autumn crop. It will be more abundant and higher quality. For summer berries, plant separate bushes of summer-bearing varieties (Yaroslavtsev, 2003). In southern regions with long, warm autumns, you can try the two-crop regime.
Mistake 9. Pruning Without Considering Variety-Specific Traits
What it is: The gardener prunes all varieties the same way, without considering their shoot production, vigor, or tendency to lodge.
Why it's wrong: Varieties with high shoot production ('Kirzhach', 'Lazarevskaya') require stricter regulation, otherwise they become severely crowded. Varieties with low shoot production ('Kaliningradskaya', 'Kokinskaya', 'Sputnitsa') need more careful handling—every cane is valuable (Yaroslavtsev, 2003). Varieties with drooping tops ('Novost Kuzmina') require pruning at the bending point, otherwise stems will lodge under the weight of the crop (Yaroslavtsev, 2003).
How to do it right: Learn the characteristics of your varieties and adjust pruning accordingly. There are no universal recipes.
Mistake 10. Ignoring Tool Disinfection
What it is: The gardener uses the same pruners for diseased and healthy canes without disinfecting them.
Why it's wrong: Diseased canes (especially with viral and bacterial infections) contain pathogens that are easily transferred to cuts on healthy plants through the tool. This spreads infection throughout the plantation (Rieger, 2010).
How to do it right: After pruning each diseased cane, wipe the blades with alcohol, a potassium permanganate solution, or a special disinfectant. Have two pairs of pruners—one for healthy plants, one for diseased ones (if the workload is large).
How to Avoid Mistakes – Quick Checklist
1. Know your variety – whether it is fall-bearing or not, and its shoot production capacity.
2. Prune individually – evaluate each cane separately.
3. Don't rush – spring pruning should be done after the worst frosts have passed, but before bud break.
