- Uniform seedlings. With proper growing, all transplants will be the same age and size, giving a uniform harvest.
Disadvantages of the transplant method:

Practical tip: if you use drip irrigation or plan to mulch, take this into account when marking rows. Row spacing should allow easy access for watering, hoeing, and harvesting.

Therefore, after sowing and watering, it is helpful to mulch the surface with a thin layer of peat, compost, or dry soil (1–2 cm). If crust does form, it should be carefully broken by light hoeing (using a rake with sparse teeth) before emergence, but being careful not to damage seeds.

- Check soil temperature. If it is below 15 °C, development slows. You can temporarily cover the bed with film or non‑woven material for extra warming.
- Check moisture. Drying of the topsoil is a common cause of delayed emergence. Moderate watering with warm water can help.
- Inspect seeds. If you didn't pre‑sprout and sowed dry, some may have been poor quality. In that case, re‑sow with pre‑sprouted seeds in the bare spots (Panteleev, 1986).
When seedlings need immediate intervention:
- Mould appearing on the soil surface around seedlings – a sign of excess moisture and poor ventilation. Ventilate, lightly loosen the soil, reduce watering.
- Damping off ("black leg") – the stem at the base becomes thin, darkens, and the plant falls over. This is a fungal disease that develops rapidly under wet conditions and overcrowding. Remove diseased plants, treat the soil with a weak solution of potassium permanganate or a fungicide (Welbaum, 2015).

For already planted plants, use frame or frameless covers (Lebedeva, 1987; Panteleev, 1986). Also, planting part of the crop as transplants under covers guards against total loss in adverse weather.
Mistake #9: Excess Nitrogen Fertiliser in Early Growth
